Every year for the past 20 years, San Jose resident Francis McVey, a retired naval flight officer who served during Vietnam and the Cold War, says he has participated in the #VeteransDay parade, an event organized by the United Veterans Council (UVC). The San Jose Veterans Day Parade is from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018. The parade begins at Highway 87 at Santa Clara Street east down Santa Clara Street right onto Market Street, and ends at San Carlos Street. Most County of Santa Clara Government Offices will be closed Monday, Nov. 12 in observance of Veterans Day. With the exception of 24/7 operations such as Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC), the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and correctional facilities, County of Santa Clara government offices will be closed to the public on Monday. All Santa Clara County Libraries will be closed on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 11-12. Please check operation schedules at County of Santa Clara government offices will reopen for service on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

On the eve of the midterm elections, congratulations to the 13 high schools that participated in Supervisor Cindy Chavez's nonpartisan, pilot Student Voter Registration Day in October! They preregistered/registered close to 1,000 students to get them engaged in the voting process! Below they made a video after the ceremony on the importance of people under 40 voting in today's election! The schools rewarded include: Mount Pleasant, Yerba Buena, Silver Creek, Andrew Hill, Evergreen Valley, Piedmont Hills, Santa Teresa in East Side Union High School District. With Santa Clara County’s biggest police agency in the fold, the sobering station — a significant upgrade to the standard jail drunk tank — is expected to see a big jump in the number of people brought to the center to help them recuperate. “In six minutes or less officers can be back on the street keeping our communities safe by dropping off inebriated people at the sobering station. A happy ending to a sad story. There’s good news to share on the coyote pups that were found and rescued by Calero Park staff back in April. The pups, healthy and older, were set free today at Calero County Park. The pups have been under the care of the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley. It was a very exciting moment for all involved to see the young coyotes frolicking in their new home!

Full-Service Satellite Locations Open Monday, Closed on Election Day; 50+ Drop-off Locations Available Voters wanting to cast their ballot early have all day today to use the seven satellite Early Voting Centers located from Gilroy to Palo Alto as well as the Registrar of Voters’ (ROV) San Jose headquarters. After today’s closing, voters will have to go to a polling place or the ROV office for in-person voting. Completed Vote by Mail ballots may still be mailed in postage-free if postmarked on November 6. Completed Vote by Mail ballots may also be dropped off today at the Registrar’s Office, any Santa Clara County Early Voting Center or any of the 50+ drop-box locations. On Election Day, voters are reminded that the Early Voting Centers will be closed.
