***PRESS RELEASE*** By: Lt. Robert Kozlowsky October 17, 2018 Bank Robbery Arrest On 10-17-18, Shelton Police and Detectives, with the assistance of the Seymour Police Department, arrested 37 year old Michael Mangiafico of Seymour and charged him with Robbery 1st Degree and Larceny 3rd Degree. Mangiafico was held on a $100,000 bond and will be arraigned today (10-17-18) at Derby Court. The arrest stems from the bank robbery that occurred two days prior at Key Bank located on Bridgeport Ave in Shelton. The expedited arrest was partially due to the tips received after releasing pictures of the suspect to the public.

Shelton Police Investigate Bank Robbery On 10/15/2018 at approximately 10:00 AM Shelton Police were dispatched to 704 Bridgeport Ave., Key Bank, on a report of a bank robbery. The suspect pictured in surveillance footage passed the teller a note demanding money from the teller and implying that he had a weapon. No one was injured during the incident. Anyone that may have information regarding the bank robbery or suspect information can contact the Shelton Police Department at (203) 924 -1544. Calls will be kept confidential.

Two year old boy drowns in pool in Shelton By:Detective Richard Bango On 10/08/2018 at approximately 11:00 AM the Shelton Police Department received a 911 call regarding an unresponsive two year old boy. The boy was discovered in the swimming pool by a relative on Copper Penny Lane where he was staying for the day. Shelton Police and EMS responded to the scene and the boy was transported to St Vincent’s Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Initial investigation by Shelton Detectives revealed the boy wondered outside from the house and fell in the pool before he was discovered by a relative, who was babysitting him for the day. The boy resided in Shelton with his parents. The case remains under investigation.

On Sunday, October 7th, there will be two events in the downtown area. Shelton Day will be held at the Riverwalk on Canal St. Canal St between Cornell St & Wharf St will be closed at 7:30am. The Columbus Day Parade will begin at the intersection of Howe Ave and Brook St and end at the intersection of Canal St and Cornell St. At 10:00am, Howe Ave between Brook St and White St will be closed. At 11:15am, the entire parade route will be closed. There will be a parking ban for the entire parade route starting at 9:00am. Detours will be set up and police will be on scene to assist with traffic. Motorists should expect delays.

Special Olympics athletes inspire those around them on a daily basis as they overcome obstacles, seek inclusion and break down stereotypes. This Sunday, August 19th, the 9th Annual Sunset Run for the Warriors will take place in Shelton. The race will begin at the Huntington Green on Church Street and continue onto Isinglass Rd, Nichols Ave and ending at Church St. The 5K will cut across Blueberry Lane to Nichols Ave. At 5:00 pm the entire race route will be closed to all traffic except for emergency vehicles. The race route will remain closed until the last runner has passed through a particular section or roadway of the route. Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes during the time period of the race

Officers from the Shelton Police Department will host a Tip-A-Cop fundraiser for Special Olympics Connecticut at Arooga’s Grille House and Sports Bar, 405 Bridgeport Avenue. All tips the officers receive for their efforts will go to Special Olympics Connecticut, to support its year-round sports, health and fitness programs for athletes of all abilities.

Press Release aids in Arrest made of Purse Theft Detective Richard Bango On 05/08/2018 an 84 year old female victim reported her purse was stolen out of her cart while she was shopping at Shop Rite located at 875 Bridgeport Ave Shelton. The victim immediately called her bank to cancel her credit cards, only to learn that her card was already used at TJ Maxx on Bridgeport Ave. Video surveillance was obtained from the store and a woman can be seen stealing the purse out of the victim’s cart while her back was turned. A photograph of the suspect woman and the vehicle she fled in was released to the press requesting help in identifying her. After the press release, a tip was called into the Shelton Police Department regarding the woman and the vehicle. The Detective Bureau investigated the tip and identified 59 year old Denise Purciello of 639 Schoolhouse Lane in Orange as the woman who stole the purse and fraudulently used the credit card. On 07/26/2018 Puciello was arrested and charged with Larceny 4th Degree and Theft of a Credit Card. Purciello was held on a $1000.00 bond and brought to Derby Superior court for arraignment. *The charges in this press release are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty*

SPD makes 11 Arrests in Statewide Warrant Operation Detective Richard Bango July 19 2018 On July 18, 2018, after several months of planning, over 90 municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in Connecticut executed a “Statewide Warrant Sweep Operation”. The operation commenced pre-dawn with each participating agency conducting sweeps for wanted persons within their jurisdiction. The targets of this operation were individuals who are currently wanted on felony and misdemeanor outstanding arrest warrants for Failure to Appear and Violation of Probation. In total, this operation netted 267 arrest warrants being served statewide. The Shelton Police Detective and Patrol Divisions participated in this operation. The Shelton Police Department arrested 11 individuals during the operation.

***PRESS RELEASE*** By: Detective Richard Bango Shelton Man Arrested for 7 Commercial Burglaries On 07/12/2018, SPD arrested 44 year old Michael Macy of Shelton. The arrested stems from a rash of commercial burglaries that Shelton experienced from December 2017 through March 2018. During the investigation Shelton Detectives learned that Macy was responsible for burglarizing the Wheels gas station on Old Stratford Road three times, JD’s package store on River Road, Andros Liquor store on River Road, AJ’s gas station on River Road and the A&F Mohegan gas station on Mohegan Road Macy was charged with Burglary 3rd Degree, Larceny and Criminal Mischief on six of the arrest warrants and Criminal attempt to Commit Burglary 3rd on one. Macy was held on a $122,500 bond and arraigned in Derby Superior court on 07/12/2018. ***The charges in the press release are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.***

***PRESS RELEASE*** By: Detective Christopher Nugent July 9, 2018 Shelton Police Arrest Man on Warrants arriving by Bus On 07/09/2018 Shelton Police arrested Fredrick Kushpinsky age 49, of Shelton on 3 outstanding warrants for Failure to Appear in Court and on an outstanding arrest warrant for eight (8) counts of violation of a protective order. Shelton Police were contacted in June that Kushpinksy was attempting to make contact with a victim from a previous domestic violence arrest. During the course of the investigation it was discovered that Kushpinsky was sending mail while incarcerated on domestic related charges from Bridgeport Correctional Facility attempting to make contact with a victim Kushpinksy had three outstanding warrants for missing court on other arrests. Shelton Police with the assistance of Waterbury Police were able to locate Kushpinsky arriving at the bus terminal and take him into custody without incident. Kushpinsky was held on $300,000.00 bond and is scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court on 07/10/2018. ***The charges in the press release are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.***

***PRESS RELEASE*** By: Detective Christopher Nugent 2nd Arrest Made in Fatal Accident On 06/22/2018 Lawrence Carter, Age 19, of Bridgeport, surrendered himself to the Shelton Police after an arrest warrant in connection with this investigation was issued for his arrest. Carter was charged with 2 counts of manslaughter 1st degree, 2 counts of negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, 4 counts of Assault 1st degree, and Illegal racing on a highway. Carter posted a $50,000.00 court set bond and is scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court on 07/09/2018 at 9:00 A.M. Previous Release: An investigation has revealed that a Mini Cooper was traveling southbound on River Rd when it crashed into a Saturn traveling northbound on River Rd. There were four occupants in the Mini Cooper and three occupants in the Saturn. There was a third non-contact vehicle involved in the crash. Police have identified the vehicle and the driver of the non-contact vehicle. 18 year old Shalymar Herrera of West Haven was pronounced deceased. 23 year old Briana Torres-Carter of Bridgeport, who was pregnant, was also pronounced deceased. Both were passengers in a Mini Cooper that was being operated by 19 year old Lawrence Carter of Bridgeport. Lawrence Carter is currently in the hospital in critical condition. Also in the Mini Cooper was 19 year old Jessie Abrams of Bridgeport. Abrams is currently in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Saturn, 25 year old Caitlin Kalafus of PA, was taken to the hospital. The two passengers in the Saturn were 22 year old Carly Kalafus of PA and 26 year old Paul Valleau of PA. All three were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
