Thank you to CBS Philly and Stephanie Stahl for sharing Blakleigh's story.

Since 2016, Nemours duPont Hospital for Children orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter Gabos has been traveling to Belize to provide pediatric spine care to children with severe spinal deformities. This fall, he returned to do a VEPTR lengthening in Alex, a young man with thoracic insufficiency syndrome (TIS) due to severe congenital (present at birth) spinal and rib abnormalities. TIS occurs when malformations of the spine and chest cavity make it impossible for the lungs to grow normally. You can read more about Alex’s initial surgery on the Nemours Promise Blog: Congratulations to Alex on standing tall after his most recent surgery!

ICYMI: On Wednesday, September 26, a clinical team from Nemours Children's Health System joined a team of doctors at Bustamante Hospital for Children in Jamaica to perform the first-ever liver transplants on the island. 13-month-old Zaiden received his new liver from a living donor, his dad! On that Friday, a second liver transplant was performed on a 16-month-old girl, Kayon; her uncle was the living donor. This short video recaps the historic week. The goal is for our Nemours team to continue working with the Jamaican team until they can do these surgeries on their own. Congratulations to both medical teams, and we wish all the best to little Zaiden and Kayon and their families!
