Members of our Special Operations Unit met yesterday with Mrs. Cameron from West Park Place Elementary School and Principal Prettyman and Ms. Porras from Downes (John R.) Elementary School. Both schools were provided with reflective lights to give to their students to use on Halloween. On October 30, 2018, at about 2307 hours, officers were dispatched to an apartment at the Colonial Gardens Apartments, 334 East Main Street, for a report of a burglary in progress. Arriving officers found that the suspect had already fled the area. During the investigation, the male resident of the apartment advised that he came home to his apartment and heard noises from the bedroom. [ 123 more words ]

The emergency traffic signal work at South College Avenue and Christina Parkway has been completed and traffic is now flowing normally.

Due to emergency traffic signal work by DelDOT, traffic at the intersection of South College Avenue and Christina Parkway (SR 4) is currently being significantly impacted. Traffic traveling through the intersection eastbound will be forced to turn south on South College Avenue (SR 896). Traffic traveling westbound will not be permitted to make any turns and will be forced to continue traveling straight. [ 41 more words ]

On October 27, 2018, at about 1949 hours, Newark Police were dispatched to the area of South College Avenue, just north of Christina Parkway (SR 4), for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Arriving officers found that a 42 year-old female, who was crossing the roadway from the east side to the west side, had been struck by a vehicle while crossing the southbound lanes of South College Avenue. On Thursday October 25, 2018, a Newark Police officer was on routine patrol on East Main Street at approximately 9:15 p.m. The officer observed a vehicle pull out onto East Main Street and was driving with no headlights on. A traffic stop was initiated by the officer. The officer contacted a male driver who presented the officer with a piece of paper that contained a photocopied foreign driver’s license. On Saturday, October 27, 2018, Newark Police will participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration's National Prescription Drug Take Back Day initiative. Between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm, members of the public may surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction. On October 20, 2018, Newark Police charged 100 people with Underage Consumption of Alcohol following a report of a disorderly party in the 300 block of East Park Place in Newark. At about 3:09 pm, Newark Police received a complaint of a disorderly party in the area of East Park Place and Ashley Road. Officers determined that alcohol was being provided to persons under the age of 21 who were attending the party. [ 302 more words ]

It is with deep regret that the Newark Police announce the passing of retired Corporal Thomas Scott Smith. Cpl. Smith retired on a non duty-related disability on March 31, 2016. Originally from West Chester, PA, Cpl. Smith began his law enforcement career with the West Chester University and West Pikeland Township (PA) Police Departments before he was hired by the Newark Police Department on August 11, 1997. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Earlier this month, City Council issued a proclamation recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This week, the City is participating in the Shine the Light Campaign by shining purple lights on the municipal building. There is also a table inside the municipal building with education and outreach materials. Domestic violence thrives in darkness and silence. Our goal is to let victims and survivors know they are not alone and that help is available.

On October 8, 2018, a business in the 900 block of Interchange Boulevard, Newark, reported the theft of multiple vehicle batteries from trucks belonging to the business. The theft occurred over the weekend while the business was closed. The owner of the business contacted a Newark-area battery company and found that a male and female had recently been at the business to sell batteries to the battery company. [ 204 more words ]

On October 3, 2018, a bicycle was reported stolen from within the attached garage of a residence on Woodshaw Road. The garage door had been left open. Officers developed a 17-year-old Newark juvenile male as a suspect in the theft. On October 4, 2018, officers observed the juvenile riding on a bicycle in the area of Church Road in Newark. Officers attempted to stop the juvenile and he fled from officers on the bicycle. [ 190 more words ]

On October 5, 2018, at about 7:08 pm, Newark Police were dispatched to a crash at the intersection of Library Avenue and Wyoming Road. Responding officers found a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle. The pedestrian was transported to an area hospital and the Newark Police Traffic Unit responded to investigate the crash. Library Avenue is now open

Newark Police are currently on the scene of a serious crash involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Library Avenue (Route 72) and Wyoming Road. Library Avenue southbound is closed south of Wyoming Road. Southbound traffic is being diverted onto Wyoming Road. Northbound Library Avenue traffic is getting by slowly. The roadway is expected to be closed for an extended period of time as the Newark Police Department Traffic Unit investigates the crash. [ 32 more words ]

Newark Police Seek Assault Suspect Newark, DE (October 3, 2018) – On Sunday September 2, 2018, at approximately 1:11 a.m., the Newark Police responded to Klondike Kate’s, 158 East Main Street, for a report of an assault. Officers made contact with a 21-year-old female who stated that there was a verbal altercation on the second floor of the establishment between herself and another female. Newark, DE (October 3, 2018) – On Tuesday September 18, 2018, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the Newark Police responded to the 200 block of East Delaware Avenue for a report of a bicycle theft which just occurred. Traffic Alert - Academy Street Closed Academy Street is closed between East Delaware Avenue and Courtney Street for a Hazmat situation on the University of Delaware Campus.

Today our officers joined with Amtrak and other state, local, federal and railroad law enforcement departments for "Operation Clear Track" to raise awareness and enforce railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws.
