It’s that time of year again! Greenbrier Public Schools will begin classes on Monday August 14. We’d like to remind drivers of three important safety laws to protect our children and keep our highways safe. HANG UP, SLOW DOWN, and STOP FOR BUSES. 1.HANG UP. Especially in school zones. Arkansas law 27-51-1609 prohibits the use of any handheld wireless telephone in a school zone. Additionally, Arkansas law 27-51-1504 always prohibits texting, or any wireless interactive communication while driving anywhere, not just school zones. Each of these violations carries fines and costs of at least $250. 2.SLOW DOWN. Greenbrier school zones are always marked by highway signs. In school zones when children are present, the speed limit is reduced to only 25 MPH. Speed violations are heavy enforced during school-zone hours. 3.STOP FOR BUSES. Many drivers are confused by this rule, since Highway 65 is a major highway with four lanes. However, the rule is very simple. If you see a school bus with flashing stop-lights, ALL VEHICLES, IN ALL LANES, MUST COMPLETELY STOP until the bus deactivates its lights and begins moving again. The fine for this offense is $260 and is strictly enforced. We wish everyone a wonderful and safe school year! Please let us know if we can answer any questions or be of specific assistance to you or your child.

Staff Sergeant Robert Dale Van Fossen is coming home. Robert Van Fossen was a graduate from Greenbrier High School in 1949. All are encouraged and welcome to stand at the sidewalk as the processional passes through town with or without an American Flag, displaying respect for a fallen Solider native to Greenbrier. For more than 60 years, he and 51 others have been resting on an Alaskan glacier. But in 2012, their plane's wreckage was re-discovered and recovery efforts began. in March 2016, Van Fossen's family was notified that a positive identification had been made and that his remains would be returned to Arkansas. The remains of Robert Van Fossen will be returning, in the care of his nephew Kevin Caid, to Little Rock Airport on May 25th at 2:30PM and traveling back through Greenbrier that afternoon to Heber Springs. http://thecabin.net/local/2017-02-10/greenbrier-soldier-s-remains-recovered-identified-over-60-years-later
