The WRPD applied for a federal grant this past July through the Bureau of Justice. The purpose for this grant was to place new, in-date, body armor on all of our officers. We received word today we were awarded the funds for the vests!! We were only 1 of 62 jurisdictions in Arkansas to be awarded this grant. This grant was a 50/50 grant, meaning the city would still have to bear 50% of the costs whether approved or not. As you see on Facebook and on the news, and it's no different here as one might think, police work is far more dangerous today than it was 20 years ago. With that being said, I'd like to thank the Walnut Ridge City Council and Mayor Charles Snapp for seeing this through. The council voted unanimously for appropriating the funds to absorb the total costs of the vests in August, whether approved for the grant or not. They literally have our backs. Great acts of kindness like this tend to go without notice. Please make a point to thank the Walnut Ridge council members and the mayor for this great act of kindness.

This is tomorrow.

Update on HWY 412W and HWY 67N. It's been reported the water on HWY 412W is still covering the road. HWY 67N still has water running over it near the Shannon area. Both highways will remain closed until the water recedes and the highway department deems them safe to travel on. Please continue to follow our page along with the City of Walnut Ridge Facebook pages. We will continue to post updates as we receive them.

Highway 63 between Portia and Hoxie will be reopening between 9:45 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. this morning. The Highway Department is currently working to make this happen. People might want to wait until that time before attempting to travel through there. At this current time Highway 63 is still closed until the final preparations for its reopening have been completed. Due to many calls and questions we've received I want to clarify with everyone, Highway 63 is the ONLY highway that will be reopening soon. We haven't heard of any estimated dates or times of any other highways reopening in the Walnut Ridge/Lawrence County area. We will keep you informed when we hear more but please continue to be patient. Continue to monitor the Walnut Ridge Police Department and City of Walnut Ridge Facebook pages for further updates.
