For the 16th time this year, our APD family is grieving the murder of a police officer in the #lineofduty. Our condolences to the Clinton Missouri Police Department (MO) on the shooting death of Police Officer Christopher Morton who was responding to an unknown trouble call as a result of a 911 call, last night – March 6th at approximately 9:20 pm. Officer Morton’s death marks the second Clinton police officer to be shot & killed in the line of duty in the last seven months. Officer Morton, as well as other Clinton PD officers, responded to a home after CPD received a 911 call where screaming was heard in the background on the call, but the caller did not otherwise communicate and hung up before officers arrived on scene. As the officers arrived at the home a male subject opened fire on them with a semi-automatic rifle. The officers returned fire and entered the home in an attempt to take the man into custody. The man continued firing, wounding all three officers. Officer Morton remained in a bedroom for several minutes before being rescued by the other officers. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. The subject then barricaded himself inside the home for several hours. A SWAT team entered the home shortly after midnight and located the subject deceased. Officer Morton, age 30, had served as both a reserve officer and full-time officer with the Clinton Police Department for three years. He had recently returned to full-time status following the line of duty death of Police Officer Gary Michael on August 6th, 2017. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard and is survived by his parents and siblings. As we grieve the loss of Officer Morton, we also send our thoughts & support for a full recovery for the other 2 officers shot in this horrible incident.

With sadness, we announce the passing of retired K9 Ares, who worked alongside his partner, Officer Rob Lopez from May of 2010 until his retirement in April of 2016. While in service, Ares assisted in locating over a million dollars in drug money and once located 12lbs of methamphetamines hidden behind an instrument panel of a car during a traffic stop. He additionally made countless appearances at local schools and pet expos. Since retirement, Ares enjoyed home life with the family and his new job of keeping watch over his 3 human brothers. The following is an excerpt from a tribute Officer Lopez wrote about Ares: “I remember when I got him, he would not even come within five feet of me. At the end, I couldn’t get five steps out of a room without him either leading the way or following me. Working the streets with him, finding bad guys and drugs will always be a highlight of my career in Law Enforcement. I’ve never shared a bond like this with any other animal. He was always so vigilant and was there when I needed him without hesitation; saving my butt on more than one occasion. In retirement, he greeted friends and family whenever they came over and looked after “his” boys, wherever they were in my house. He lived a good life; a warriors life.” K9 Ares will always be remembered as a part of our APD family.

Our condolences go out to the Boone County Indiana Sheriff's Office on the #lineofduty shooting death of Deputy Sheriff Jake Pickett. On Friday, Deputy Pickett, a canine handler, joined a pursuit with the Lebanon, IN Police as they were attempting to apprehend a wanted subject. Lebanon Police Department officers had gone to a home to serve a warrant on a subject. Once at the residence, they recognized another man as also having warrants but he fled in a vehicle with two other people when the officers tried to take him into custody. The wanted man fled on foot with Deputy Pickett and his canine in pursuit. Deputy Pickett was shot in the head as he rounded the corner of a building. The subject was shot and wounded by another officer but was able to return to the vehicle and flee again. He was taken into custody following another vehicle pursuit. Deputy Pickett, age 34, was transported to a local hospital before being flown to St. Vincent Hospital, in Indianapolis. He was kept on life support until the evening of March 4th, 2018, so that his organs could be donated. Deputy Pickett had served with the Boone County Sheriff's Office for three years. He had previously served with the Tipton County Sheriff's Office for two years and the Marion County Sheriff's Office for three years. He is survived by his wife, two young children & his partner of 2 years, K9 Brick. Rest in Peace to our brother, taken too soon, whose commitment to service will be remembered.
