South San Francisco Police Department News

Congratulations to the 2017 Graduates of the SSFPD Citizens’ Police Academy! These citizens spent 12 weeks and spent two and a half hours each Thursday night to learn what goes on in the South San Francisco Police Department. The Citizens’ Police Academy teaches different aspects of police work that ranges from hiring of officers, to SWAT Team and K-9 Team demonstrations, to firearms training in our own shooting range. Each class is unique, packed with information, and a lot of fun! We encourage our citizens to sign up and take advantage of this opportunity to learn about police work and the officers that serve South San Francisco.

Meet Our New K-9! Officer Michels has picked a name for his new partner. Meet Groot! Groot is a character from Guardians of the Galaxy in which Officer Michels is a big fan of. The winning name was first submitted by Lisa Closmore. Officer Michels also liked Apollo by Rory O’Neill and Deo by Kevin McMullan. Sadly, Doggy McDogFace did not make the cut. We would like to thank everybody who participated in naming our new crime fighter. Don’t forget to say “Hi!” to Officer Michels and Groot when you see them patrolling the streets of South San Francisco.

Happy Halloween! Here are a few safety tips to make today safe and fun.

Name Our Newest K-9 Contest!!! What’s in a name? EVERYTHING!!! A name can have a lasting impact on a person, and since we at the South San Francisco Police Department think of our K-9 partners as people, naming them is a VERY important process. With the recent addition of a brand new furry police person to our law enforcement family, the SSFPD would like to involve our community in naming our newest crime-fighter. This bright, young and adorable male Shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix will soon be starting his police training with Officer Michels and is in need of an appropriate name. If you think you have a great idea for what he should be named, we encourage you to send us your submission via our Facebook or Twitter accounts. If your name is ultimately selected for our new police-pup, you will be invited to the Police Department to meet him in person, have your photo taken together, have it posted on our social media sites, and receive some great prizes from our K-9 unit. Officer Michels is counting on you to ensure his partner has the coolest name in the County!!! Our current K-9 partners are named: Diesel, Mannix, Blitz, Aries, Titan, and Indy Deadline for submissions is Halloween at 5:00pm.

Here is a good way to provide financial help to the community organizations in the North Bay.

The outpour of support from our community continues as we have had many inquires about if we were still accepting donations for the north bay fire victims or not. Our residents want to know if there are any other local donation sites. The answer is, YES....Saint Robert’s Convent located at 349 Oak Avenue, in San Bruno. They will be accepting donations today until 4:00 p.m. and from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm tomorrow....The South San Francisco Police Department’s collection ended yesterday and the results were priceless! We thank you all for the support!

The devastation of the North Bay Wildfires have been heartbreaking, but that just brought out the best in humanity as donations were more than what SSFPD anticipated. We thank all the citizens for their generosity as well as volunteers who helped out for this worthy cause. The much needed goods were delivered to Red Cross at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds today. Once again, the South San Francisco Police Department would like to thank everybody for helping out the victims of the wildfire.

Meet Officer Perez Officer Perez has been with the South San Francisco Police Department for 4.5 years. He has been on patrol the length of his career, but was recently assigned to Downtown Bike Patrol starting in January 2018. Officer Perez is the first in his family to work in law enforcement. He is fluent in Spanish, which has been extremely helpful in serving the residents of South San Francisco. Officer Perez studied and planned on practicing law as an attorney. While he discovered interesting roles within the legal industry, he found law enforcement to be more personally rewarding. The most rewarding part of Officer Perez’s job is helping people during their moment of crisis. He has the opportunity to establish great relationships with people in the community through his role as a Police Officer. During his spare time, one of Officer Perez’s hobbies is playing soccer with his 2 year-old son.
