Sarasota Police Department News

‪The sun is setting which means day shift is heading home & night shift is coming on. Enjoy your evening, City of Sarasota,. We’re keeping watch. ‬

HEADS UP: Starting November 15th, we're increasing patrols for pedestrian & bicycle safety. The safety campaign is in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation & the University of South Florida's Center for Urban Transportation Research. The goal of the safety campaign is geared to increase awareness of pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle safety through education and enforcement. Intersections in the City of Sarasota, Government that were chosen were selected based on crash data involving both pedestrians, bicyclists and motor vehicles. The intersections were also chosen for their volume of pedestrian traffic and number of accidents involving both vehicles and pedestrians or bicyclists: • Main Street (between 100 block to 2000 block) • Fruitville Road (from North Tamiami Trail (State Road 45) to Beneva Road) • North Tamiami Trail from Mound Street to University Parkway • North Washington Boulevard (U.S. 301) from Main Street to Myrtle Avenue Additional information can be found by clicking the link below...⬇️⬇️⬇️

‪SLOW DOWN: We stopped a driver going 75 in a 40 mph zone on Fruitville Road today. Please slow down. Speeding can kill. #Sarasota #LESM‬

Special thanks to Elizbaeth Djinis with the Herald-Tribune Media Group for the great coverage on our Kids Against Bullying Program at Brookside Middle School. “Bullying happens everywhere, and usually it happens outside of school,” Sarasota Police Officer Todd Perna said. “The kids see that this makes a difference. They truly believe that they make a difference.” Read more in the link below 🍎📚⬇️ (CC: Sarasota County Schools)

THANK YOU, SARASOTA 💙🚔 This week, while taking his lunch break with his family, Officer Kennedy was approached by a woman who handed him this $25 gift card at Jimmy John's, and simply said “thank you for what you do,” and walked away. Officer Kennedy decided to pay it forward, walked up to the register & asked the staff to use the card for the next person or people who came to eat. To the anonymous woman who handed Officer Kennedy this gift card, thank you. To the numerous people who share support and appreciation in person, on the street or on our social media channels, thank you. It’s our honor to continue to serve and protect the City of Sarasota,.

Stop by The Harvest Sarasota Fall Festival from now until 7pm, located at 3650 17th Street, Sarasota, & meet our Officers & Sarasota Police Department Volunteers! They’d love to meet you. Stop by the Sarasota Police Department tent - there are free giveaways! 🚔🚔🚔

‪Great reminder from our partners at Sarasota County Emergency Services: When you change your clocks tomorrow, make sure to change your smoke alarm batteries & your weather radio batteries. #DaylightSavingTime‬

Sarasota Police School Resource Officer Todd Perna, who is assigned to Brookside Middle School, is continuing to work with students involved in KAB = Kids Against Bullying. The KAB acronym was created by Officer Perna. During KAB meetings, Officer Perna and students speak to victims and offenders of bullying and students have an opportunity to speak about the effects and consequences of bullying. Students take an active role in combating bullying through peer counseling during the meetings. Students share incidents that occur on social media and on campus face to face. Since KAB formed in January 2016, Officer Perna has seen a dramatic reduction in the amount of reported incidents on and off campus with students. KAB started with 17 student members in their first year and has grown to more than 30 members this year. The team wears t-shirts every Friday at school with the KAB logo on them, designed by students. The shirts identify members of KAB so other students can talk with them about bullying or any other conflicts they might have seen or heard about. KAB is working to recruit additional members for the next school year.
