Albany Police Department Criminal Investigations Bureau Family Protection Unit Missing Juvenile Kaila Grace Mason, 14 was last seen around 6:00 pm. on March 2, 2018. Kaila is 5’04” and weighs about 165 pounds. Anyone with information about the whereabouts of Kaila Grace Mason, please contact the Albany Police Department at 229-431-2100.

Justin Levance Ellis, 22 has been charged with Murder. Ellis is the second person charged with Murder in the Night Club shooting that occurred on March 3, 2018. Ellis was transported to the Dougherty County Jail at 4:45 p.m. for booking. Jack Carlton Williams III, 31 was shot in the parking lot while walking to his car after a fight broke out inside the club. Ellis came in on his own to be interviewed by investigators at approximately 2:40 p.m. this afternoon. Additional arrests are expected. Update: Arrest Made in Albany Night Club Homicide Monday, March 5, 2018 Albany, GA- The Albany Police Department’s Robbery/Homicide Unit have charged 27-year old Johnny Bernard Smith with Murder, Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime. Smith, who was accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself in this morning at approximately 9:00 a.m. to the Law Enforcement Center. Smith has been transported to the Dougherty County Jail for booking. The Albany Police Department thanks the community and those who assisted with this investigation. Background: Albany Police Department Investigates Fatal Nightclub Shooting Saturday, March 3, 2018 Albany, GA – At approximately 3:09 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, 2018, the Albany Police responded to 723 East Broad Avenue to investigate a homicide. The preliminary investigation revealed security cleared Legends Night Club after an altercation occurred inside. As people were walking to their cars, an unknown person fired several shots, striking two people. A male victim was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. A female victim arrived a short time later with a gunshot wound to the arm. The names and ages of the victims have not been confirmed at this time. This incident has been turned over to the Robbery/Homicide Unit for further investigation and suspect(s) information is being developed. The Albany Police Department hosted its first “Hotel Business Watch Meeting”. The Crime Prevention Unit sent out letters on behalf of Chief Michael Persley inviting all Albany hotel/motel owners to the meeting. Chief Michael Persley listened as hotel owners shared their concerns. Seventeen owners and personnel were in attendance.

Assistance needed with another shoplifting case. The suspect entered the store on 02/16/2018 at approximately 4:30 p.m. and stole over $100 worth of liquor before walking out. Reminder: Basic Firearms Safety Class scheduled for Saturday, March 10, 2018 has been rescheduled for March 17, 2018. The Albany Police Department’s firearm safety course for citizens will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at 8:00 a.m. at the Law Enforcement Center in the Community Room. The eight hour class, which is open to citizens 21 years of age or older, will cover basic handgun safety, legal issues, and handling skills needed to deploy a handgun for self-defense. Applicants will have to sign a release and authorize the Albany Police Department to conduct a background check to determine eligibility for the course.
