Watkinsville Police Department News

It's with great sadness in our hearts that we must report that our former Mayor, Charles Ivie, lost his battle with cancer today. We learned about it late this afternoon and out of respect for the man he was and his family he left behind we waited on posting this. He was a good man and and good friend to many. He will be missed.

We have a number of crosswalks in town. Here is a little information on how they apply for drivers.

The events that unfolded at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada last night are absolutely reprehensible. There is no justification for opening fire from the 32nd Floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel into a crowd of people that are enjoying a good time. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to the family's of the 50 individuals who passed away as a result of this tragedy. Included in the 50 deceased were two Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officers who were off-duty and were working the festival. We also send our best wishes for a speedy recover to the 400 people that were wounded. According to initial reports a lone gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon from the 32nd Floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino. SWAT teams were deployed to the area and the subject was located inside his room where he was killed in an exchange of gunfire. Currently authorities are searching for the gunman's roommate as a person of interest. As information unfolds we will try to pass this along as quickly as we can.

If anyone is interested in attending, there will be a celebration happening on top of the hill at Oconee State Bank (corner of Experiment Station and Main St) in honor of Constitution Day...... I had to look it up as well and apparently today is in fact Constitution Day. There will be a speech followed by the firing of a cannon. Yes, I said cannon. So if you are ANYWHERE close to this location and hear a rather sizable "BOOM" around 4:15-4:30, that is what it is. It also signals that you missed the event. Come out and join others in celebrating Constitution Day! https://www.facebook.com/events/166370063798597/?ti=cl

Georgia State Law of the Week: **** 40-6-74 - Operation of vehicles on approach of authorized emergency vehicles **** State Law requires all motorists to move to the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the road when a emergency vehicle that is operating lights and sirens approaches them. Either from the front or the rear. Pro Tip: If you are at an intersection and there is a police car or a fire truck behind you with its lights and sirens going, it's a bad idea to just sit there. We are going to an emergency, please move. At this point it is OK to proceed WITH CAUTION through the intersection, this means check to make sure there's not going to be an accident beforehand then slowly get out of the way. Each week we will post a "new" State Law of the Week that we feel is applicable to our community in response to what we see in and around town.

****ATTENTION**** Hurricane Irma is here. The whole state of Georgia has been placed in a State of Emergency. Please use common sense if you choose to leave your homes. This is a serious storm. We have a few tips to help you help yourself: - If you don't have to leave your home, don't. - If you do have to leave your home use extreme caution. - State law requires that if you are driving in the rain that you have your headlights on. It's not for you to be able to see, but so other people can see you. YES even in the daylight. - When driving, leave with PLENTY of time to get where you need to go. You might be required to take a detour. Plan ahead. - Do not call 911 to tell us that your power is out. Call your power company, they deal with that. - 911 is to be used if you have a SERIOUS emergency. - If you come up on a 4-way intersection that has no power and the lights are NOT functioning, treat this intersection as a 4-WAY STOP SIGN. Come to a complete stop and observe normal traffic rules. Please help us help you by using common sense.

Experiment Station Road had one lane of travel closed today due to a disabled tractor trailer. No one was injured as a result of quick action by the Oconee Sheriff's Office and the PD. Wanna give a big thank you to Wilson's Wrecker service and the Oconee Fire Rescue guys from Station 1 for helping get the road cleaned up and back open as soon as possible.
