Boone Police Department News

DON'T RELY ON THE LUCK OF THE IRISH One of America’s favorite holidays, St. Patrick’s Day, is March 17, and we continually see a spike in drunk-driving crashes on this date every year. In order to make Iowa roads safer all across the state drivers will notice heightened traffic enforcement March 14 – 17, 2018. Law enforcement officers will especially be watching for drunk drivers and vehicle occupants not wearing a seat belt. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nationally, during the 2016 St. Patrick’s holiday (the latest year numbers are available) 39% of all vehicle crash fatalities involved drunk drivers. In the hours between midnight and 6:00 a.m. on March 18th, 69% of all crash fatalities involved drunk drivers. Drunk driving IS preventable! It is not worth the risk of injury, jail time, your death, or the death of another person. No designated driver? Download the NHTSA app, “SaferRide” before going out to celebrate. The app will allow users to call a taxi or designated friend for a ride home by just identifying their location. For Android devices, from Google Play store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nhtsa.SaferRide For Apple devices, from iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/usapp/saferride/id950774008?mt=8 Drivers should also keep an eye out for pedestrians who have had too much to drink. Walking while intoxicated can also be deadly, as lack of attention to their surroundings could put pedestrians at risk of getting hit by a vehicle. The Boone Police Department and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau reminds you, Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving. Don’t Do It!

02/20/2018 State of Iowa announces new suspicious activity reporting campaign Say Something IOWA website is launched https://www.saysomething.iowa.gov/index.html Feb. 19, 2018 DES MOINES—Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg today announced the launch of a campaign to educate Iowans on the importance of reporting suspicious activity. The Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Iowa Department of Public Safety are partnering with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to promote the “If You See Something, Say Something®,” campaign, which was created to educate the public on the importance of reporting suspicious behavior that could indicate terrorism or terrorism-related crime. The private sector, through the Safeguard Iowa Partnership, and local law enforcement, through the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association and the Iowa Police Chiefs Association, are also partners in this effort. “There are things that we all can do to increase the safety of our communities, state, and nation,” Gov. Reynolds said. “We are asking all Iowans to pay attention to their surroundings, and if they see something that looks suspicious, to report it to local law enforcement or call 911.” With the recent school shootings in Florida and other locations in the United States, the governor asked parents, students, school faculty and staff, and members of the community to be especially vigilant for signs of potential violence and to report it to school officials or law enforcement. The “If You See Something, Say Something®,” public awareness campaign will include radio public service announcements through 2018, along with sharing and reinforcing the suspicious activity reporting message with the assistance of private business and local law enforcement agencies, and through social media platforms. As part of this campaign, the Iowa Department of Education will work with campaign partners to expand its efforts to spread the message on the importance of reporting suspicious activity. The State of Iowa has partnered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for past campaigns that included “If You See Something, Say Something®,” posters at the Iowa State Fair, statewide broadcast of radio public service announcements, billboards, bus signs, and community outreach through law enforcement. “As we go about our days, going to work, school, shopping, traveling, if we see something out of the ordinary, something that shouldn’t be there, or that someone’s behavior doesn’t seem right and causes suspicion, we should contact our local law enforcement agency or call 911,” Lt. Gov. Gregg said. For more information on Iowa’s “If You See Something, Say Something®,” campaign, visit saysomething.iowa.gov.

The roads are expected to become icy today and into tomorrow. Please slow down and drive safe.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, law enforcement and first responders, and all who were affected by the senseless violence in Florida today. This was an act of pure evil against helpless victims. There is going to be a lot of debate about why or how this happened. Those discussions will be important, and necessary, but let's not forget the innocence we've lost today; 17 young people lost their lives today, many are injured and countless more will never be the same. Violence is not a Florida problem, or a big city issue. It's a society issue. Love defeats evil. Period. We must resist the urge to divide ourselves into subgroups and come together as one. So, what can do here in Boone? Last fall, the Boone Police Department, along with our partners at the Boone Fire Department, Boone Sheriff's Office and the Boone County Hospital tested our response to this very thing at the Boone High School. We continue to train, as do our partners and the Boone Schools. Please know that we are doing all we can to keep your kids safe.

This Saturday is Coffee with a Cop. Please join us at the Boone Police Department from 8-9am. Casey's is donating donuts again!
