A multi-car crash on Hwy 5 at Fleur Dr. is causing significant traffic delays, both eastbound and westbound. Police, Fire, and EMS crews are on scene. Please use an alternative route if needing to travel through this area. Thanks!

The City of Des Moines has developed a new parking strategy for its vibrant and growing downtown area. What began on Jan 1st with changes to the parking ramps, is now moving forward to include the metered spaces in the Court Avenue Entertainment District. These changes include extended enforcement hours and the addition of free, nearby parking options. Following this link to learn about the changes, check out the maps, and see what's ahead! The meter enforcement changes take effect TONIGHT, Jan 17th. There will be a grace period where warnings will be issued for only overtime parking violations that occur during the new, extended enforcement hours. Violations other than overtime parking will continue to be enforced. THE GRACE PERIOD ENDS JAN. 31ST. Thanks for working with us as we work to make downtown Des Moines THE place to live, work, and play!

A minor crash on I-235 EB at Easton Blvd is causing delays. If you're traveling that way prepare for delays or take an alternate route. Thanks!!

****UPDATE**** Between 6:15 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., DMPD officers have responded to an additional 15 crashes and/or disabled vehicles. Various parts of the City are being impacted by power outages. These outages are affecting some traffic control signals, adding to the travel challenges today. If you can stay home, stay home. If not, drive safely and slowly. Thanks...

It's 6:15 a.m. and the first crash during the "morning commute" has been reported... Don't be second. Second place stinks. Schools are cancelling, and the City's first responders are reporting that road conditions are quickly deteriorating. If you must travel, drive slow and give each other plenty of room. Thanks...

I-235 westbound from Downtown is experiencing significant delays due to multiple minor crashes. Please find an alternate route if needing to travel through this area. Thanks...

Between 12:10 a.m., 01 Jan 2018, and 5:00 a.m. 02 Jan 2018, 10 motor vehicles were reported stolen to the DMPD. Of those 10 vehicles, 7 were left unlocked and running. If you do not have a remote-start option with an anti-theft feature, we encourage you to not leave your running while it warms up. It's cold, and it's going to be cold for a while. This would be a bad time to be without a car...

I-235 westbound at the Des Moines River bridge is closed due to a crash. Traffic is being routed off at the Penn Avenue exit. Please choose an alternate route if needing to travel through this area. As a reminder, bridges and overpasses are often slick during the winter months, even when the approaching roadway is not. Slow down, give yourself plenty of stopping clearance, and drive safely.

The Des Moines Police Department is putting extra effort into our OWI enforcement tonight. Drink responsibly, be safe, and we'll see you in 2018!

The men and women of the Des Moines Police Department would like to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas! Please keep in mind all the first responders who are working around the clock to keep our community safe through the holidays!

It is with great sadness that we report the death of a member of the DMPD family. Senior Police Officer Tori Aletheia died yesterday, following a surgery in Iowa City. SPO Aletheia had proudly served the Des Moines community since 2013, and was also a military veteran. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, and we thank everyone who has reached out with support.

Des Moines Police Department detectives are requesting the community’s assistance with identifying two robbery suspects. On 04 December 2017, at 6:54 p.m., the Productos Mexican Grocery at 2300 Hickman Road was robbed. This was the second such robbery at this store within two weeks. During this robbery, the clerk was threatened by a suspect who was armed with a handgun. Attached are photos of the suspects and a suspect vehicle. The suspect in the red clothing is believed to be the “look-out” and driver of the suspect vehicle. The vehicle appears to be a dark-colored, newer model Mercedes Benz. The vehicle may have bullet holes in it, as the clerk fired a handgun at the suspects as they fled the scene. Anyone with any information regarding this investigation is asked to call the Des Moines Police Department at 515-283-4811, or Crimestoppers of Central Iowa at 515-223-1400.
