The situation in the Knolls Complex is currently secure. The affected building on Knollwood Road has been secured with police officers on scene over night. At first light today many residents have returned to their homes. The Tri-State Fire Protection District personnel and their mutual aid partners were able to examine all of the other buildings and then allowed the residents to return. At this time, Commonwealth Edison has restored power to most of the other buildings in the complex; a 1:00 am report from ComEd said only 70 customers were without power then. Two injuries have been reported in this event; one was transported to a hospital and the other treated and released at the scene. The source of the gasoline contamination into the sanitary sewer system appears to be a gas station in Westmont. Crews have cleared the sewer system and will continue to monitor it for hazards. The Knolls community members were extremely inconvenienced during this dangerous event but their patience and cooperation with the emergency responders was a shining example of the true "art" of being a COMMUNITY.

UPDATE FUEL SPILL: The sanitary sewer line under 63rd Street has been contaminated with gasoline. This contamination caused an explosion earlier today in the Knolls Complex. Currently the Knolls Complex is without power. Residents of the Knolls are encouraged to stay tonight with friends and family. Residents along the 63rd Street corridor should be alert to the smell of gasoline in their basements, crawl spaces, and floor drains. Call 911 immediately if you smell gasoline in your home. The Red Cross has established a shelter at Hinsdale South High School 75th and Clarendon Hills Road.
