With high graduation this weekend, the Ellinwood Police Department wishes to congratulate the 2018 Senior class of Ellinwood High School. While we hope everyone celebrates graduation responsibly, we want to keep the public informed of the department's efforts to deter under aged drinking this weekend also. There will be an increase in patrol activities this weekend, with the goal to deter under age drinking and the unlawful hosting of under age drinking parties. The department's goal is to ensure that everyone has a safe weekend leading up to graduation. If you see or suspect under age drinking parties are occurring, please report them to the department by calling the Barton County 911 administrative line, 620-793-1920. Be safe and have a great graduation weekend.

With the arrival of warmer weather and rain, the Ellinwood Police Department wanted to remind everyone to please try to keep your property clean and mowed. If a yard is considered to be in violation of the City's ordinance regarding weeds and their removal, the owner and tenant of that property will receive the following letter. To Whom It May Concern, It has come to the attention of the Ellinwood Police Department and the City of Ellinwood that your yard located at (address location), Ellinwood, Barton County, Kansas is in violation of City of Ellinwood City Ordinance 8-401, concerning weeds. This includes the backyard. The Ordinance reads as follows; 8-401: WEEDS TO BE REMOVED. It shall be unlawful for any owner, agent, lessee, tenant, or other person occupying or having charge or control of any premises to permit weeds to remain upon said premises or any area between the property lines of said premises and the centerline of any adjacent street or alley, including but not specifically limited to sidewalks, streets, alleys, easements, right-of-way and all other areas, public or private. All weeds as hereinafter defined are hereby declared a nuisance and are subject to abatement as hereinafter provided. You have ten (10) days from date of notice to correct the observed violation. You may request a hearing before the governing body or its designated representative within five (5) days of the receipt of notice. If, after ten days the violation still exists, the weeds will be cut by the City of Ellinwood and you will receive a billing for services rendered. No further notice shall be given prior to the removal of weeds during the current calendar year. Colson was also found in possession of narcotics after a search incident to arrest. Colson was transported to the Barton County Jail, where he was booked and confined in lieu of bond. The Ellinwood Police Department has recently received complaints of vehicles driving past school buses when the stop sign is activated and the lights on the bus is flashing red. As a reminder, when the lights and sign are active on a school bus, all vehicles must stop until the sign is retracted and the lights are turned off. Failure to do so can result in a traffic citation. The fine for this violation is $300.00 plus court cost. The Ellinwood Police Department will providing an increased presence before and after school to insure that the traffic laws are observed. The last thing anyone wants to have happen is to have a child, who has gotten off a bus, to be struck by a vehicle, whose operator chose not to follow the driving laws.

PLEASE SHARE: The Hoisington Police Department has requested that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) issue an endangered person advisory for a missing Hoisington girl. The whereabouts of Iviona Lewis, 2, are unknown. Lewis is a black female, 3 ft. tall and approximately 27 lbs. She has black hair and brown eyes. Lewis was last seen, wearing only a blue pull-up diaper, Sunday night at approximately 11 p.m. at 414 N Elm in Hoisington, Kan. The Hoisington Police Department asks anyone who comes in contact with Lewis, or has any other information known about this case, including past sightings, to immediately call 911 or the KBI at 1-800-KS CRIME.

Type of Incident: Missing Child Date of Incident: 03/18/2018 Date of Release: 03/20/2018 For Immediate Release The Hoisington Police Department and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a missing 2 year old child. Description of the child is a 2 year old black female, 27 pounds, and black hair . The child was last seen Sunday evening at 22:50 hours in the 400 block of Elm in Hoisington. Last known clothing is only a diaper. Hoisington Police Department, Fire Department, EMS, Kansas Highway Patrol and the Barton County Sheriff’s Office are conducting a door to door search. If the public has any information about this missing child, please contact 911 immediately.

Juvenile driver was cited for Inattentive Driving. 02/13/2018 A Report for operating a vehicle without a driver’s license was made in the 100 block of West A Street. David Cannon was served a citation for the violation. 02/16/2018 William Fields was arrested in the 100 block of West E Street on two Barton County Warrants. Type of Incident: Search Warrant Date of Incident: 02/27/2018 Date of Release: 02/28/2018 For Immediate Release On February 27, 2018 at about 8:30 PM the Barton County Sheriff’s Office and the Ellinwood Police Department conducted a joint operation in the city of Ellinwood. Sheriff’s deputies and Ellinwood police officers executed a search warrant in the 500 block of S. Humbolt St. in the city of Ellinwood. Upon entry into the single residence officers located a substantial quantity of methamphetamine, firearms and drug paraphernalia. Arrested at the scene was Scottie Schmidt, age 40 of Ellinwood. Schmidt was booked on charges of distribution of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, felon in possession of a firearm and no drug tax stamp. Schmidt is a registered drug offender. Schmidt is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond. Sheriff’s deputies were on the scene several hours last night processing evidence. The investigation is ongoing, further arrests are possible.

A summons was issued to be served on Keith Burke. 01/24/2018 A Theft Report was taken in the 200 block of West First Street. Lainie Sturn and Isreal Klein were served summons for the violation. 01/28/2018 An Unattended Death Report was made in the 600 block of North Main Street. TRAFFIC CITATIONS: 01/23/2018 Katelyn Henning was cited in the 500 block of East Santa Fe Boulevard for Speeding.

With Spring weather on its way, the Ellinwood Police Department will start checking for city ordinance violations. If you receive a letter in regards to an observed violation, please take the letter as it is meant to be. That being a reminder. The Ellinwood Police Department is not in the habit of harassing or " picking on" any one person. Our goal is compliance. We would prefer that the letter, informing you of the violation, be enough and the deficiency would be corrected. We do not want to use punitive measures to gain compliance, but if necessary, we will serve summons to those persons, who fail or refuse to comply. So please help the Ellinwood Police Department make the City of Ellinwood a better place to live.

Peterson was also charged with Resisting arrest and Possession of Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia. Peterson was transported to the Barton County Jail, where he was booked and confined in lieu of bond. TRAFFIC CITATIONS: 12/12/2017 Ernest Klima was cited for Speeding in the 400 block of West Seventh Street. 12/13/2017 Brian Erb was cited for Speeding in the 300 block of West Seventh Street. 12/29/2017 Wilbur Koehn was cited for Speeding in the 500 block of East Santa Fe Boulevard.

On January 5th, 2018, at approximately 9:20 AM, the Ellinwood Police Department, with the assistance of the Barton County Sheriffs Office, executed a search warrant on the residence located at 409 East First. As a result of the search warrant, Carlton Robert, "Robbie", Edwards was arrested and transported to the Barton County Jail. Edwards was arrested for Possession of Narcotics with the intent to Distribute, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana and of Drug Paraphernalia. Edwards is confined at the jail in lieu of bond.

On December 25th, 2017, at approximately 1800 hours. The Ellinwood Police Department, with the assistance of the Barton County Sheriff and the Kansas Highway Patrol arrested Kenneth Peterson in the 600 block of North Main on several Sedgwick County Warrants. An affidavit has also been filed with the County Attorney for Felony Obstruction, Aggravated Assault and Criminal Damage to Property. Peterson is being held, without bond, at the Barton County Jail.
