Earth Hour is a chance for people around the world to #CONNECT2EARTH from 8:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. March 24 local time. Turn off the lights, shut down the computers, and give some thought to how you and your family can take action for our planet and nature. The Mission Sustainability Commission will meet at Broadmoor Park, beginning at 8 p.m. Meet and greet with friends and neighbors, and then at 8:30 p.m., it's lights out for s'mores roasting and trail walking. We encourage you to bike or walk to this event! Make sure to turn off your lights at your home and office, and join us in the park. Bring a lawn chair, a flashlight, and ideas on how to continue to save energy beyond Earth Hour. It's Severe Weather Awareness Week! Johnson County will be participating in the state-wide tornado drill Tuesday, March 6 at 10 a.m. This will include an activation of the outdoor warning sirens and a test of the NotifyJoCo mass notification system. We encourage everyone to use this time to practice or develop their own personal severe weather plans. Practice safely moving to your designated safe place, clean up or supply your safe place, or determine your severe weather sheltering plan and discuss it with your family. We also encourage everyone to visit NotifyJoCo.org and update their contact information or create an account if you haven't already done so! If the drill is unable to be conducted as scheduled for March 6th due to any reason, it will be rescheduled for March 8 at 10 a.m. If it is unable to be conducted on the 8th, the drill will be cancelled.

A message from Waste Management: Dear Municipal Customers, Due to the severe safety risks resulting in the additional ice that came in overnight, we have had to make the difficult decision to suspend all residential routes again today, Thursday. We will resume Friday in completing the Wednesday routes and we are targeting completing the Thursday routes on Saturday this week. Unfortunately we do not see the capacity to complete this week's Friday collections. Our current plan is to suspend the Friday 2/23 collections until the following week, 3/2. For those impacted Friday collection customers, we will collect all extra waste on 3/2. We apologize for this weather and safety related inconvenience.
