**** SCAM ALERT **** Please Share UTILITY SCAM I have been notified by the Overbrook Chief of Police of a scam that was recently played out on business owners in their community. The victim receives a phone call from persons saying they are with "Westar" and on their way to shut off the utilities if a huge amount is not paid immediately using pre-paid gift cards. Another scam at this time of the year is the tax-rebate and the tax over-due scams. TAX REBATE SCAM Basically, the will tell the victim they are the IRS and have discovered the person is due to a huge tax rebate but needs their banking or credit card information to make a direct deposit. AS you might guess, they are not making a deposit, but now with your financial information, they are going to "steal" your money. TAX DUE SCAM On the flip-side of the Tax rebate scam is the scare tactics of past due to taxes and unless the victim acts immediately every possession they own is minutes from being seized, unless they pay up thousands of dollars immediately. As Chief Hollingsworth noted, he has checked with the Attorney Generals office and most of the scams are persons in another country, outside the reach of U.S. law enforcement making it nearly impossible to catch them. Do not fall for this junk! Do you really think a business or a government entity is going to call you and demand payments using gift cards? Most scams work either using FEAR or GREED. Chief Nech

PLEASE SHARE WINTER HOUSE TIPS - Keep cabinet doors open in kitchen and bathroom so warm air gets to pipes. - Let a trickle of water drip from faucets. - Turn up thermostats several degrees and keep it on the same setting night and day. Even though this may mean higher heating bill it is far less costly than water pipes bursting. - If going outside make sure you are protected with warm clothing, mittens (they are warmer than gloves) and ear/face protection. If the wind chill is -19 degrees the skin can freeze in less than 30 minutes. WINTER TRAVEL TIPS - Make sure your vehicle is well serviced (do not forget good battery, windshield wipers, and fluid). - Check your tires for good tread/traction and proper inflation. - Stock the vehicle with bottled water, non-perishable snacks such as nuts, energy bars, and candy; blankets or sleeping bags, extra winter clothing, jumper cables, ice scrapers, flashlight, first aid-kit, snow shovel, sand or salt, and charged cell phone. - Keep your gas tank as full as possible! - Monitor weather and road conditions, allow extra travel time at slower speeds. - PLEASE DO NOT travel in hazardous road conditions unless you absolutely have to! - Clear snow and Ice completely from your vehicle before driving. - Drive with headlights turned on even in daylight. - Speed limits are meant for best weather conditions – not roads that are wet or slippery. Drive slower, leave more distance between you and other vehicles. - Avoid using your cruise control! - If you are stuck – stay with the vehicle and wait for help - tie a bright colored rag to the vehicle radio antenna. - Remain seat belted, in the event your vehicle is struck by another vehicle. - Run the vehicle about 10 minutes every hour to stay warm. Make sure your exhaust pipe is clear from snow blockage which could cause deadly gas to build up in the vehicle (leave the window open slightly to let any toxic fumes escape while running your vehicle). - Let someone know your travel plans including routes, and expected arrival times (always keep a charged cell phone with you).

WestStar who supplies electricity to Osage City is apparently down. The entire town is without electricity. The City is working as quickly to restore power to town.
