The new utility bills will be mailed out today. We understand that there is an increase in the bills this month, as there always is this time of year. Due to the heat, next month also looks to be higher. There is no denying that it has been hot out and it definitely takes more energy to keep things cooled down.
Every month we manually check our bills to make sure that the computer is calculating correctly. We also select accounts and compare the bills from the current month to the same month the previous year. With the accounts we checked this month, the increase ranged from $7.00 to $28.00 over this same time last year. The amount of kilowatts used were higher and the cost of electric is also higher. The bill from last month was for the dates between May 15th and June 15th, the bill this month is for the dates between June 15th and July 15th. There have been more days over 100 degrees in this bill cycle than the last one. If you notice a large increase this month from last month, the kilowatt usage also doubled on several accounts that were checked. This goes back to the read dates and temperatures. (Again, the comparison is more accurate to the same time frame the prior year, not the prior month).
The City figures the bill based upon usage. The City staff has no control over the heat outside, the age of your A/C unit, how your thermostat is set or any other thing that may affect your usage. When it is hot and humid out, everything works harder to cool. The staff does not set the rates or generate the consumption out of your home and have no control over your bill. If you have an issue with your bill, please be courteous to the staff!
Please call the City office at 620-234-5011 with any questions and we will do our very best to assist you.
