This morning the Midland Police Department and the Midland County Sheriffs Office were dispatched to the ESA building at Sugnet and Jefferson. The Midland County Dispatch Center had received a call in which the caller stated there was a student with a gun and there was a "shooter" in the school. Law Enforcement arrived on scene and with the help of the school's administration we quickly determined the call to be false. The building was searched and secured. We would like to thank the school administration, parents and especially the students for remaining calm and understanding during the situation. Please remember that the students of the ESA are extremely unique people and are dealing with disabilities that many of us don't understand. If you feel the need to comment on this incident to please keep those students and their families in mind.

INFORMATIONAL UPDATE: MPD would like you to know that the incident at Midland County Educational Service Agency this morning was a FALSE REPORT. At no time was anyone in danger and at no time was there ever an active shooter. Everyone was completely safe, including the caller.

COFFEE WITH A COP . WEDNESDAY 10-4-17 from 8-10 am!!!! On Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 8 to 10 a.m., the Midland Police Department and members of the community will come together at Coffee Chaos in Midland to discuss community issues, build relationships, and enjoy a good cup of coffee during a “Coffee with a Cop” event. Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the police department’s work in the City of Midland. The majority of contact between the public and law enforcement happens during emergencies or emotional situations, which are not always the most effective times for relationship building. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction between residents and the officers who serve and protect them. Engaging the community in public safety efforts is a top priority of the Midland Police Department. MPD encourages all citizens to attend these events to share their concerns and meet the men and women who make every effort to address them. Coffee Chaos is located at 6201 Jefferson Avenue in Midland. Special thanks to Denise and Kim Krantz with Coffee Chaos for opening their business for this event. Any questions can be directed to Community Relations Sergeant Chris Wenzell at 989-839-4704 or Cwenzell@midland-mi.org. -30- About Coffee with a Cop Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time. Coffee with a Cop events similar to those in Midland are held weekly across the country as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.
