With weather moving in... a reminder of our snow ordinance. If Public Works declares a snow emergency. There is no parking: 1) Avenues until the street is plowed full width 2) Streets from 8am until 6pm or until plowed to full width. We need your vehicles off the street prior to the plows coming. We do write tickets and can tow violators, but would prefer not to issue any citations. Please use common sense, this is MN and snow could come 24/7. Please plan as though it will snow at anytime. We do send text alert out when snow emrgencies are called. Sign up at

On 11/10/17 around 0702 hours the Chippewa County dispatch center received a 911 call from a resident at the 1415 Black Oak apartment complex that there was a fire in one of the units and the caller believed there were people still in the complex. Montevideo Police, fire department and ambulance responded. Officers on scene were unable to get a count of all tenants and entered the building along with members of the Montevideo fire department who went directly to the scene (not in gear) and were able to make contact with remaining tenants. The fire department was later able to extinguish the fire which caused significant damage to the upper unit where the fire originated, as well as smoke damage throughout the entire complex. Tenants as well as the two officers who entered the building were treated for smoke inhalation on scene by the Montevideo ambulance staff, with the officers later being seen at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital where they were both treated and released. 11 Tenants were transferred to nearby facilities until temporary housing could be sought. The Salvation Army, Prairie Five and Saint Martin’s Fund have provided funds for shelter, food and clothing to assist tenants during this process. The State of MN fire marshal was contacted and the fire is under investigation with the complex being closed until the investigation is completed and the Montevideo building inspector deems the building habitable. Assistance was also provided by the MN State patrol and Chippewa County Sheriffs department. Capt. Ken Schule Montevideo PD

Today.. The Montevideo Police Commission will be interviewing Police Officer candidates. After the interview, applicants must participate in our physical fitness test. This year it is being conducted in Smith Park. You will see law enforcement activity there until after 10pm. Our test is based on activities they may encounter in a standard MPD Shift. Including a 140lb dummy drag, getting over a 5 foot wall, climbing a ladder with a rifle, getting through a window, and a half mile run and other obstacles. It is a pass/fail test. While we do not expect officers to be super athletics, we do need officers that are physically fit to serve the public. The video is of Sgt Eickhoff completing the course in 2014.
