K9 Training Recently, we hosted K9 training at the municipal pool building. It was a fantastic site to host the monthly county wide (WCSO, Woodbury, Stillwater, and Cottage Grove) K9 Training. There were a lot of opportunities for some great environmental scenarios with apprehension work. We also had the opportunity to work narcotic detection training in as well.

What a great way to start the weekend! A generous resident dropped off some Nadia Cupcakes to Public Safety to say thanks. Officer Young don't forget to share!

Thank you Afton Apple for the generous donation to the Cottage Grove Public Safety Board!

Today, Director of Public Safety Craig Woolery was recognized at the Washington County Board of Commissioners meeting. Sheriff Dan Starry read the resolution in appreciation of the work Craig Woolery has done as the Cottage Grove Public Safety Director. The Washington County Board of Commissioners wished Craig “the best in his retirement and safe and happy years ahead.” Part of the resolution states, “Craig Woolery has created lifelong relationships that help strengthen the partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and Cottage Grove Public Safety, and fostered great cooperation and trust during his tenure as the Public Safety Director.” After Sheriff Starry read the resolution, County Board Chair Karla Bigham shared some very heartfelt comments. Director Woolery was Karla Bigham’s D.A.R.E. Officer and later worked with her as a City Council member, State Representative and County Commissioner. Both were both obviously honored to have worked with each other! This was a great surprise. Thank you Washington County for taking time to thank Director Woolery for his 34 plus years of service!

Thank you to all that helped today! They weren’t kidding when they reported heavy wet snow was coming and then blowing snow! Here is an example of why Cottage Grove is such a great community… Beginning around noon, Cottage Grove Police responded to 12 reports of accidents, stuck vehicles and vehicle spin outs. (This doesn’t include responses from the MN State Patrol) While 12 doesn't seem like much, one incident had dozens of vehicles stuck on the Highway 61 ramp to 80th, another had at least 14 vehicles stuck on E Pt Douglas and just after 4 pm we had a reported crash where the driver was found to be intoxicated. She was transported to the hospital with DUI charges pending. And those were just incidents related to the weather. We still had other calls for service. Officers commented on how many times during the shift they were helped by citizens. During a few of the events, officers stopped to push stuck vehicles. When safe, we had numerous citizens stop and help us push. Thank you! Your help and efforts are greatly appreciated and did not go unnoticed.

As it gets darker, visibility is getting worse. Please use caution if you need to drive tonight. Remember to slow down and increase your following distance. Use caution around plows and give them room. Also use due care when approaching an emergency vehicles including police vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, construction and maintenance vehicles and tow trucks. SLOW DOWN and safely MOVE OVER.

Please be careful if you go out to shovel/snow blow. This is a heavy wet snow which presents a real risk of heart attack and other injuries. And whatever you do…DO NOT PUT YOUR HAND in the snow blower to clear an obstruction. If you do get out there, watch for symptoms of heart difficulties: unexpected chest tightness, shortness of breath, and pain or burning in the chest, jaw or shoulder. Do not assume that a strange muscular pain is due to exertion. Symptoms of a heart attack include pain referred to other parts of the body. Please keep an eye out on your neighbors especially those that are elderly or have known health conditions.

Congratulations to Captain Pete Koerner who will serve as the city's next public safety director beginning Feb. 24. Read more here: http://bit.ly/PSDirector
