Garwood Police Department News

Members of the Garwood Police Department are participating in a fundraiser for Cancer Research. Each day, 22,000 people die from cancer worldwide (WHO). There's a good chance that someone you know and love will be affected by this disease. Nearly half of cancer diagnoses and deaths are preventable. No-Shave November's mission is to not only raise funds for cancer research and treatment but to educate the population about preventative measures. For over six years, participants around the globe have put down their razors and foregone their hair appointments to join the fight against cancer. The No-Shave November campaign has successfully raised over $3.5 million dollars to combat this disease. Every dollar raised brings us one step closer in our efforts to fund cancer research and education, help prevent the disease, and aid those fighting the battle. Each whisker grown allows us to embrace our hair, which many cancer patients lose during treatment. Will you join us? Start by using the links below.

There is a significant presence of marijuana candy and other edible forms in New Jersey and nearby states. The presence of these edible forms of marijuana poses a great risk to users, especially to children, who may accidently receive marijuana candy during Halloween. Marijuana candy is illegal in New Jersey. Recommendations: • If you believe you or your child has received marijuana candy, immediately contact your local police department. • Wear vinyl or non-latex gloves if handling possible marijuana candy. • Thoroughly wash hands after removing and disposing of the gloves properly to prevent potential ingestion of any drug particles.

Today is the first day of school and the official start of the school year. Please help our community to keep our children and pedestrians safe. As always our officers will be out there in the school zones to enforce parking and traffic laws and making sure our children make it to school and home safely. * Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason. * Come to a complete stop. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding. * Eliminate distractions. Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chances of crashing. And children can be quick, crossing the road unexpectedly or emerging suddenly between two parked cars. Reduce risk by not using your cell phone or eating while driving, for example. * Reverse responsibly. Every vehicle has blind spots. Check for children on the sidewalk, in the driveway and around your vehicle before slowly backing up. Teach your children to never play in, under or around vehicles. * Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and a bicyclist. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that he or she wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride.
