Public safety announcement from Capt. Ralph Harvey, winter break safety:
Athens Police Department would like to remind all residents of the following security tips:
• Allow extra time for travelling, decrease speed near bridges and known problem areas.
• Clear all car windows of snow, ice, etc. before leaving.
• If you are leaving town:
o Lock all doors and windows, including upper floor windows, balcony doors, etc.
o Do not leave large amounts of cash or other valuables (jewelry, passports, firearms, laptops, etc.) unsecured.
o Ask neighbors/friends who are staying to check on your residence. Leave easily moved valuables with them.
o Have mail/newspaper delivery stopped or ask friends who are staying to collect items.
o Do not announce your absence in public forums, including social media.
o Follow recommendations/requirements from landlords in regards to heat, water shut offs and utility service; do not turn off heat. Disconnect outdoor garden hoses.
o Lock vehicles; do not leave valuables or keys in them.
o Check all exterior lighting, replace bulbs, fix broken motion detectors, etc.
o Leave some interior lights on timers, preferably in upper floors.
o Do not leave pets that require care unattended.
o Inform landlord, friends and/or neighbors of departure and expected return times, leave them contact information.
o Obtain renters insurance and/or determine if parents policies cover your belongings, you landlord’s policy probably does not.
All residents are encouraged to contact law enforcement if suspicious activity is observed.
