Athens Police Department News

On March 12, 2018, the Athens City Police Department received several phone calls from citizens reporting an ongoing I.R.S. telephone scam designed to intimidate people with arrest for failing to send money to them. The scammers can often know a lot of information about whom they are calling and can change their caller ID information to make it seem like the call is coming from the IRS, local government agencies, or other local numbers. Citizens are advised not to give out any personal information to the scam callers and to hang up on them immediately. If you are concerned about receiving such a call you should contact the I.R.S. directly.

The Athens City Police Departments phone number, 740-592-3313, is being used to make vulgar phone calls in the area. We are looking into the matter and please understand these calls are not coming from our office.
