Elyria Police Department News

Coffee with a Cop was established in 2011 and has since become a national incentive that is supported by the United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The goal is for Coffee with a Cop to become a regular event within our community. It is our belief that increased focus on community policing can start with something as simple as a cup of coffee. The program offers an opportunity to meet local officers and discuss community issues. Staff from the Elyria Police Department and community members will be gathering in a casual atmosphere to build trust through open communication and to drink coffee. Coffee with a Cop will give residents a chance to meet the officers, supervisors and command staff – who are all part protecting your community. We would like to create an environment that is different from the emergency situations that often serve as the sole interaction that the community has with the police. Thus, there will be an open dialog without constraints during the one-on-one conversations about current issues, the department’s efforts, or any other topic of interest.

Recently we've noticed an increase in motor vehicle thefts. After reviewing these incidents we've identified that in several of the thefts the owner left the keys in the unlocked vehicle. This time of year it's common for people to warm their vehicles up but you put your property at risk if you leave it unlocked and unattended. Ohio Revised Code section 4511.661 requires that any vehicle that is left running and unattended must be locked regardless of where it is parked (public or private property). #Dontbeavictim #lockyourvehicle

SCAM ALERT: DON’T BE A VICTIM. We’ve received two reports from citizens who received a call from a male claiming to be from a local utility provider. The male caller informs the citizen that there’s an issue with their bill & that someone would be out to their home in an hour to shut-off the utility. The male then informs the citizen that they can avoid having their utility turned off if they purchased a gift card and sends it to a certain address. Unfortunately some people fall victim to these scams. Luckily these citizens contacted their utility provider and confirmed that the male is not one of their representatives. Both citizens received the call from the same number of 800-319-0373. A call back to this number indicates that it is no longer in service. If you receive a similar call tell the caller to go pound salt.
