I was honored to attend DARE graduation at Shelby Middle School for our first DARE graduation in over ten years. Great essays by the students, a great speech by Mayor Schag and a great job by Officer Swisher! Very proud of all of the kids and I thank the city and school administrations, Shelby City Council, Adams, Albert and Curry Agency, the Junior Order of United American Mechanics, the parents, the community, and most of all the kids! Great job and I expect great things from these students. Looking forward to many more graduation ceremonies. ~ Chief Combs

We have had a number of tips turned into us regarding a concern about an imminent school shooting. In fact, a number of law enforcement agencies throughout Ohio are getting the same information. Here's where we are and what we know: The original post is from what appears to be a fake or alias facebook account. It only references "SHS". There is absolutely no tie to Shelby, nor are there any original comments on the post from Shelby. There are several from Springfield OH. The post originated elsewhere and has been shared and reposted throughout at least this state, if not the entire region and country. Shelby Senior High School is most certainly not the only SHS in the State of Ohio. We have contacted Facebook and have already obtained enough information to know that the post originated from another state. We have shared that information with the law enforcement agency from where the post originated, as well as other agencies throughout the state that we are aware of that are receiving the same information. I cannot emphasize that we have absolutely zero information that leads us to our school system being a target of violence. I have been updated throughout the evening, and no doubt will be updated through the night. I have been in contact with Superintendent Tarvin and he has been updated on everything that we know. Our School Resource Officers have been notified and briefed, and our SROs will be in their respective schools as they are every day school is in session. I would only respectfully ask that before you click "Share", or screenshot and text or snap to others that you consider the actual source or at least call us first. Spreading false or unverified information actually leads to more panic and not more safety. ~ Chief Combs

From time to time, we get calls and complaints regarding transient dealers (door to door sales). There is an ordinance that governs these dealers and there is a permit process. In order to allow citizens to see who has a permit (and more importantly who doesn't), and to read the law yourselves, we have decided to make the list available to the public, just as the registered contractor list is. You can check out the link to the list and the ordinance on the Police Department page of the City of Shelby website. ~ Chief Combs

I guess I thought that everyone had seen the local press articles regarding the bomb threat today at Pioneer. A search of the entire grounds resulted in no explosives or explosive devices being found. Which is interesting, because I continue to get calls and messages telling me that we found and even detonated everywhere from one to four bombs that were found at the school. I’m not sure where that stuff comes from, and it serves little purpose to go back and try to find out where rumors originated. But for the love of everything holy would you please not spread every little ridiculous piece of gossip you heard or think you heard on social media? I made it a point to stop what we were doing at Pioneer today and send out regular emails to the media letting them know the status. Yet everyone latched on to ridiculous rumors that still haven’t subsided. I understand the desire to know everything that goes on, but I am simply asking that people stop trying to solve every crisis from behind a keyboard and to please stop repeating unsubstantiated stories. Thanks! ~ Chief Combs
