SCAM ALERT Ardmore PD has been made aware of at least two different scams that have targeted area residents in the past few days. One is a caller claiming to be from the IRS and threatens the person with arrest or jail if they don’t pay the IRS money owed immediately. Even if you do owe the IRS money, they will not, and cannot threaten you with arrest. That this is a scare tactic to shock those targeted to get them to comply and give or send cash to the caller. The second scam is a call received on your AT&T cell phones. The caller ID shows up as AT&T Customer Service. They state that they are making changes to AT&T accounts and need the customer’s date of birth and social security number to verify their account information. The caller is led to believe they are actually talking to an AT&T representative. NEVER give your full social security number, date or birth, or any of personal information via phone. If you are a current AT&T customer, they already know that information and can access your records with a PIN number, last four of your social, or many other ways. There is little local law enforcement can do if you are a victim of these type scams. However, it is a good idea to call the police department or speak to law enforcement before any money changes hands or sent. In MOST ALL cases, these are always scams and companies requesting money will seldom do it by phone and even if you owe money, will work with you through the mail or other means. Always talk with someone you trust about these type calls before sending any money or giving out any personal information. The best thing to do is hang up or don’t answer at all. Always contact police if there are any questions about these type incidents.
