At noon on Saturday May 19th, during the Petersburg Mayfest Celebration, the first annual “Guns and Hoses” challenge took place.
Petersburg Law Enforcement challenged the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department to a physical challenge. The challenge: to pull a fully rigged fire truck one city block. The Law Enforcement team was represented by USFS LEO, NMFS officers, a USCG boarding officer, Petersburg Alaska Wildlife Trooper Litster, Petersburg Police officers and dispatchers. The Fire Department turned out in force. Their ranks included Fire, EMS and one fireman who participated in full on Viking regalia. In all there were 13 participants for each team. Both teams had the trucks cruising through the center of town at dead run. When the dust settled, the Law Enforcement team were victorious.
The challenge was proposed in an effort to promote health and fitness between the two groups. This is hopefully the first of an ongoing “rivalry” where challenges will be held during community events.
