Special Weather Statement for Eastern Chichagof Island, AK SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT UNTIL 4PM AKDT FRI ... HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS TO IMPACT THE PANHANDLE THIS WEEKEND... A STREAM OF SUBTROPICAL MOISTURE FROM THE NORTH PACIFIC WILL RESULT IN HEAVY RAINFALL OVER MUCH OF THE AREA SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY. RAIN WILL QUICKLY SPREAD ACROSS THE PANHANDLE ON SATURDAY BEFORE CONCENTRATING OVER THE SOUTHERN PANHANDLE SATURDAY NIGHT. ON SUNDAY THE HEAVIEST RAIN BANDS WILL LIKELY RETURN NORTHWARD... POTENTIALLY PERSISTING THROUGH MONDAY. TWO TO FOUR INCHES OF RAINFALL IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE REGION WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS. CURRENT WATER LEVELS ARE LOW ON STREAMS AND RIVERS IN SOUTHEAST ALASKA BUT SIGNIFICANT RISES ARE ANTICIPATED WITH THIS EVENT. EVEN THOUGH FLOODING IS NOT EXPECTED AT THIS TIME, ANY THREAT OF FLOODING WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED. STRONG GUSTY WINDS WILL ALSO OCCUR WITH THIS STORM ESPECIALLY ON SATURDAY ACROSS MUCH OF THE PANHANDLE AND POTENTIALLY FOR SUNDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHT AS WELL AS A LOW TRAVELS NORTHWARD ACROSS THE GULF. GUSTS OF 40 TO 50 MPH WILL IMPACT THE COAST WHILE 40 MPH GUSTS WILL AFFECT PORTIONS OF THE INTERIOR PANHANDLE ON SATURDAY.

Tsunami System Testing WHEN: March 30th, 2016 between 10:15am and 10:45am WHAT: a TEST of the Tsunami system will be done. You may hear sirens, or hear or see a message that a tsunami warning has been issued. WHO: Your Alaskan Community WHY: This is a test of the whole tsunami warning system to make sure it's working. It's a good time to make sure you know what to do in case of a real tsunami. It's not a real emergency Do not call 911 No need to evacuate your home or business unless you want to practice your procedures.

Hoonah Department of Public Safety closed off a section of Hemlock today for a few hours of sledding! The kids and adults had a great time!

The Police Department will be closing down Hemlock for Community Sledding tomorrow from Noon until 3:00 or until everyone leaves. Come join a fun day of sledding.

Applications can be picked up at City Hall or the Police Department Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. This posting may be used to fill multiple positions. Opening Date: Open until filled Starting Pay: $12.67 per hour or DOE The position is under the supervision of the Chief of Police through the Dispatch Supervisor: Incumbent will be responsible for but not limited to: 1. Answer 911 and general phone calls for the Hoonah Department of Public Safety. 2. Monitor and dispatch Police, Fire, EMS through the use of various Communication Systems. 3. Interact well with the public and staff members, receive complaints and forward through appropriate channels. 4. Ability to monitor and supervise prisoners through CCTV monitors. 5. Sign and abide by confidentiality guidelines and other policies. 6. Possess or be willing to successfully complete training for AK Public Safety Information Network (ASPIN), EMD, FEMA related courses, CPR and Basic First Aid. 7. Must show ability to work independently and possess the ability to operate basic office equipment. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be a US Citizen, 21 years of age, High School Diploma or GED, DD form 214 for veterans, able to pass a Department and State background check, pass a drug screen, and have no history of serious misdemeanor convictions or any felony. Just a friendly reminder that studded snow tires are to be taken off as of April 15, 2015.

With the chance of continued snow fall, motorists are advised to use extreme caution. Watch for slippery road conditions with an emphasis on roadway intersections and sloped roads. Watch speeds and give yourself plenty of time to stop. The use of vehicle lights is advised. Ensure your vehicle is free of snow before driving. And watch for children sledding on roads.”
