Congratulations to Patrol Sergeant Calvin Thomas on being recognized as the City of Cabot's Employee of the Month for the month of October. Below is the press release from the city:
The City of Cabot recognized Patrol Sergeant Calvin Thomas as the employee of the month for October for his hard work and dedication during the month of September.
This month’s nomination is unique for a couple of reasons. Not only is this the second time Sgt. Thomas has received the award as he won it about 5 years ago, but this nomination came from the Police and the Fire Department.
One morning in September, the Cabot Fire Department was paged out to a structure fire with someone inside unable to walk. Sgt. Thomas arrived shortly after the Engine and the two firefighters, Captain Henson and Engineer Fields. He quickly asked Captain Henson if he needed to put his gas mask on and help extract occupants. Not knowing where the fire was located, Captain Henson asked Sgt. Thomas to help Engineer Fields get the attack lines ready. While Captain Henson was able to remove the occupant, it was discovered this was the only occupant inside. At this time though, Sgt. Thomas came running up to him. He had found a bunker coat, SCBA and helmet and put them all on. He was not able to find the appropriate turnout pants. Regardless, he was ready to risk his life, and help save other trapped victims had they been there. While Captain Henson and Engineer Fields deserve recognition for their work that day, Captain Henson and others wanted to nominated Calvin for his bravery, and his willingness to go in right beside them.
Even before this transpired, Sgt. Thomas was being nominated for a multitude of other reasons. The Lieutenant on Calvin’s shift retired earlier this year. Since then, he has led the shift handling the normal patrol duties, his daily duties as a Sergeant, as well as many of the other duties of the Patrol Lieutenant. Additionally, Sgt. Thomas is a member of the SORT Team. Recently the team acquired a bus that needed a substantial amount of work. He volunteered and has assisted Lt. Thompson in the preparations to make this bus operational. Whether it be on Patrol, assisting as Firearm Instructor, or working with the SORT team; Sgt. Thomas has been an excellent officer and the standard for a supervisor within the Department.
