Announcement Black Indian, Native American Heritage Fair set for Saturday To commemorate November as Native American Heritage month, the City’s Racial and Cultural Diversity Commission has joined several partners to host the Black Indian and Native American Heritage Fair on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the University Plaza Shopping Center, 5820 Asher Avenue in Little Rock. The Fair, which is free and open to the public, will include a series of three presentations led by the Sequoyah National Research Center at the following times: • 11–11:15 a.m. Black Indians at Sequoyah National Research Center, Dr. Daniel Littlefield • 12–12:15 p.m. Slave, Choctaw, and Chickasaw Removal, Carolyn Kent • 1–1:15 p.m. Freedmen of the Five Civilized Tribes at the Trail of Tears, Dr. Daniel Littlefield The Fair will also include an exhibit entitled, Patriot Nations: Native Americans in Our Nation’s Armed Forces from the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. The museum notes that the exhibition chronicles the largely unknown history of Native American veterans. Native peoples have served the U.S. in every major military encounter from the Revolutionary War to today’s conflicts in the Middle East — and, at a higher rate in proportion to their population than any other ethnic group. Using art, photography and essays, the show examines more than 300 years of Native people’s contributions to the U.S. military. Also at the fair will be a Kids’ Zone with fun activities and informational tables set up by organizations such as the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, Arkansas State Archives, 4-H and University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. Partners hosting the event are: UA Little Rock, Sequoyah National Research Center, Jason Irby Innovation Foundation, University District Partnership, Racial and Cultural Diversity Commission, Black History Commission of Arkansas, Arkansas National Guard Museum.
