In Their Own Words… BNPD is taking some time to spotlight employees this month who are current or former military. Rather than ask them all the same questions, we’re leaving it up to them to share some of their memories in their own words. We’ll start with Sgt. Doug Speer, BNPD training sergeant and a 10-year veteran of the department. Branch of Service: Marine Corps I was surrounded by the Marine Corps growing up. My dad, grandfather and several uncles were all Marines, and I would always look at their pictures. College didn’t really interest me at the time, and I figured if I was going to serve in the military, I needed to serve the best- thus, the Marine Corps. I served four years active duty and was stationed on the East Coast. I was deployed to Afghanistan in August 2006 to April 2007 and reached the rank of Corporal; thereafter, it was just a natural transition for me into law enforcement. It really appealed to me because of the similar structure and work environment. No one in my family was in law enforcement either, and I wanted to do something different and be the first. One of my favorite aspects of the Marine Corps is the annual Marine Corps Ball. There are many of these events held all over the country to celebrate the Marine Corps birthday, and it’s just a great time of camaraderie among both current and former Marines. #BNPD #InTheirOwnWords #VeteransAppreciation
