We would like to wish everyone a very Happy Halloween! Remember to drive slowly and watch for those trick or treating. We recommend throwing any candy away that is not in its original packaging and always check your children's candy! Remember that those with no house light on are not participating and please be respectful. Have fun and be safe!

The San Leandro Police Department is distributing this flyer regarding the Instagram threat made on October 21, 2018:

Update to the Instagram threat: The Benson Police Department was able to identify the origin of the threat made towards "BMS." The threat originated in California and was directed at a school with those same initials. The Benson Police Department notified the appropriate law enforcement agency, which in turn investigated the threat. They identified the suspect, an 8th grade student of "BMS" in California, who has admitted to making the threat as a joke. No tie to the Benson Middle School has been identified. We appreciate everyone who provided information, as well as the Cochise County Sheriff's Office and FBI for their assistance in this investigation. This information has been provided to area school districts. The Benson Police Department takes these types of threats very seriously, even if posted as a joke, and charges will be filed against anyone making threats of this nature.

Earlier tonight, the Benson Police Department took a report of a threat to the Benson Schools, we are currently working with the school system on the threat. We recommended that classes be canceled tomorrow, and the school has agreed. All Benson Public Schools will be closed tomorrow. The school system will update parents. Anyone with any information about the threats to the school is asked to call the Benson Police Department at 520-586-2211.

In the past few weeks we have had numerous reports of various scams happening in our area. Please remember, if you didn't enter a sweepstakes, you can't win it. If you didn't enter a foreign lottery, you can't win it. If you didn't apply for a student loan or grant, you can't get money. The FBI and IRS will not call you asking for money. If you are asked to send money for something you've won, it's a scam. If you have a warrant, you will be arrested, not called and asked to provide money in lieu of that arrest. DO NOT provide anyone your banking information via telephone or any other means. No one legitimate will call you asking for that information. If you receive an email or letter or voicemail you do not have to respond. If you are contacted via social media by a "friend," contact that friend via telephone and ask if they contacted you on social media. If you have any questions regarding any letters, emails, calls, social media contacts, please contact your local law enforcement to inquire before you do anything.

**Update: All lines are now working. Thank you for your patience. All of our non-emergency lines are currently down. We are aware of the problem and Verizon is working to repair it. DO NOT use 911 for NON-EMERGENCY calls. Thank you.

Rest In Peace Officer Terrence Carraway, 30 years of service to his community. Rest In Peace sir.

Our thoughts and prayers to those affected by the events that occurred in Florence County, South Carolina, where today five deputies and two city officers were shot. One of the city officers died.

FEMA and the FCC will be conducting a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts and the Emergency Alert System, your cell phone will buzz loudly with a Presidential Alert. This alert will sound at 11:18 am. This is only a test.

The Benson Police Department sends our condolences and prayers to the family of Senator John McCain, who passed away today. Arizona and the United States have lost a true hero, RIP Senator McCain.

The administrative phones are fixed, so back to business as usual. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Benson Police Department NON-EMERGENCY lines are currently down. They are being worked on. 911 is still working in case of an emergency, please do not use the emergency line for non-emergency calls. We will notify you when the lines are back in service. Thank you.

The situation on east 5th street has been resolved. A armed barricaded suspect was holed up in the 300 block of east 5th street, the Cochise County Swat team was called and used chemical weapons to take the suspect into custody.

We currently have a Law Enforcement situation in progress on West 5th Street, there are multiple agencies involved please stay away from the area. The situation is fluid and updates will be provided when possible.

Good morning! Everything went pretty well for the first day of school, with the exception of parking. Please take note of the signs posted on the fence in front of the Primary School and Head Start, there is no parking in this area. The loading zone has been extended. Also, please remember to be considerate of others when parking. With so much congestion please get in and out of your vehicle as quickly as possible to allow others to park next to you. If you are backing out, please do as quickly and safely as possible.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and co-workers of Arizona State Trooper Tyler Edenhofer, who was shot and killed yesterday in Phoenix. Our prayers for a speedy recovery to Trooper Dalin Doris, who was wounded in the same incident. Rest in Peace

Good morning! Just a reminder that school starts tomorrow! Please pay attention to the new signs posted around the school, as the school has extended the pick-up and drop-off zone. There is no parking in front of the Primary School or Head Start, WHICH IS A CHANGE FROM LAST YEAR. Please have your children ready to exit the vehicle if you are dropping off, in order to prevent congestion. If you are planning to park, please arrive early. Obey your crossing guards, as they are there for your and the children's safety. Drive slow and pay attention. We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

According to SSVEC the power is out due to loss of a feeder line from the Arizona G&T Cooperatives. They are working on the problem, but there is no estimated time of restoration currently. Update: Power has been restored to most areas. If there is an issue with your power please contact SSVEC.

We have been told that Verizon has fixed their problems so hopefully your phones should work now.

It seems that Verizon phones are having issues contacting some of the land lines in town the Police Department included. When a Verizon caller tries to call our main administrative line it just rings on their end and does not ring at the police department. You can contact the police department on 911. Only call 911 in an emergency!
