Around 8:40 am this morning, APD officers were called to an apartment complex at 2205 W Broadway regarding a resident who appeared to be under the influence of narcotics and had assaulted an employee of the complex.
Two officers arrived and contacted the suspect. Preliminary information indicates a physical altercation occurred when the officers attempted to arrest the suspect. The officers called for an emergency response of additional officers. When backup arrived, the suspect was taken into custody. A short time later, the suspect went into full cardiac arrest. Officers performed CPR until Anaheim Fire arrived and transported the suspect to the hospital. The suspect is in critical condition, but his prognosis is not known at this time.
The first two officers on scene were both seriously injured. Both were transported to UCI with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.
Based on the seriousness of the injuries, concurrent investigations are being conducted by the APD Homicide Detail, the APD Major Incident Review Team, and the OCDA Special Assignment Unit.
