Costa Mesa Police Department News

Today on #veteransday we say thank you to all who served. We recognize all the sacrifices and hardships you faced to protect us and our freedoms. We are thankful and honored to have veterans amongst our ranks at #CMPD who have given so much to our country and our wonderful community.

We are deeply saddened and grieve the loss of a hero, Sgt. Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran who was killed in the line of duty when he ran into the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks last night to stop an active shooter. Our prayers are with Sgt. Helus’ Department and family as well as the other 12 victims lost in this mass shooting.

Today is Records & Support Personnel Day! In recognition of the great team we have here, we taped a little interview in "The Office" #parody

Today, alongside many other first responders, we paid our respects during the procession of Captain Kreza. We stand with our Costa Mesa Fire Department family. (Photo: Carrie Braun, Orange County Sheriff's Department, CA)

To anyone who would like to support the Kreza family, please find attached the GoFundMe link. Thank you in advance.

Deeply saddened by this news. Our hearts go out to our fire family, and Mike Kreza’s family and friends. Our prayers are with you.

Our Department sends Captain Kreza and his family our prayers 💙🙏

Two days ago, patrol officers arrested Brandon Doherty, 34, Costa Mesa, for stabbing a resident, who was treated and released from the hospital that same day, on May 28, 2018, at the 300 block of Costa Mesa Street. The suspect had fled the scene of the stabbing before officers arrived. We were unable to locate him, but we did recover some stolen property. Our diligent detectives worked to identify the suspect and now Doherty is behind bars, charged by the DA, and due in court today.

🎃 Here are some tips to stay safe while trick-or-treating tomorrow night 👻

Is this your car? A nearby resident called and reported the single vehicle traffic collision that occurred at about 3am this morning. We responded and found the vehicle on the center median of Del Mar Avenue and Newport Boulevard, but we didn’t find the driver. Call us if this is your car, we have some questions 🤔

We collected 125 pounds of unwanted/expired prescription drugs today and turned it over to the #DEA for safe disposal. 🙌 #goodjobeveryone

We’ll be collecting unwanted prescription medication today at the PD until 2PM. Check your medicine cabinet and bring us what you need to dispose. #nationalprescriptiondrugtakebackday

Week Six was Traffic Week. 🚓🏍Participants learned about DUI and Traffic Investigations, and a couple of students tried to pass a Standard Field Sobriety Test while wearing impairment goggles. The class instruction included a 911 call of a fatal traffic collision and the viewing of the two vehicles involved in that incident.

Our deepest condolences to Officer Toney's family and our law enforcement family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

This Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10am-2pm, bring us your expired, unused, unwanted medications and we’ll take them off your hands so they don’t fall into the wrong hands at home. Stop by Costa Mesa PD at 99 Fair Drive to dispose of the drugs listed in the graphic. This is a national event so other nearby police departments will also be participating.
