Yesterday at midnight, the Orange County Sheriff's Department deployed approximately 20 deputies to Malibu to assist Los Angeles and Ventura counties with the Woolsey Fire. Our thoughts are with the communities devastated by the Woolsey and Hill fires, the families that have lost loved ones, and the first responders working tirelessly to quell the flames and protect citizens.

Statement from Sheriff Hutchens regarding election of next Orange County Sheriff SANTA ANA, Ca. (Nov. 7, 2018) โ€“ Please see the statement below from Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens. โ€œI congratulate Sheriff-elect Don Barnes on a well-earned victory! He is the right person for the job and will be ready to lead the Orange County Sheriffโ€™s Department on day one. Two years ago I selected Don Barnes to serve as undersheriff because of his exceptional integrity, vision, and experience. Now the people of Orange County have recognized those same qualities in Don Barnes and, in their wisdom, have selected him to be their Sheriff. The public safety of Orange County is in good hands. Sheriff-elect Barnes will take office on January 7th. I look forward to working with him over the two month transition period. It is bittersweet to leave a job I love, but made easier by the fact that my successor is someone who will lead with character and informed judgment. The people of Orange County can have every confidence that Don Barnes will be a watchful steward of taxpayer dollars, a servant leader for the 4,000 employees of the Orange County Sheriffโ€™s Department, and, most importantly, a faithful advocate for the safety of Orange County residents.โ€

Upon arrival, deputies found the victim, a male bicyclist in his 40s, laying in the roadway unresponsive with visible head and body trauma. The Orange County Fire Authority responded and transported the victim to a local hospital in critical condition. From initial witness statements, the driver of a van struck the victim while he was riding his bicycle eastbound on Alicia Parkway. Today we remember a fallen hero, #OCSD Deputy Mark Tonkin. Deputy Tonkin joined the department on August 21, 1981. He was initially assigned to the Main Jail upon completing basic training. He worked a short time as a court bailiff and then assigned to @OCSDNorthpatrol. Deputy Tonkin was assigned to the Career Criminal Apprehension Team in January of 1988. Deputy Mark Tonkin, an eight year veteran of the Sheriff-Coroner Department, lost his life in a helicopter crash on Monday night, October 24, 1988, while assigned to DESERT RANGER, a multi-agency cooperative narcotic enforcement program in the state. Mark was one of eight victims aboard a California National Guard UH1H Huey Helicopter which went down and burned in mountainous terrain near El Centro, California. Earlier this week a public defender filed a motion in court regarding an incident that occurred in the City of Stanton. During the course of an encounter with an intoxicated subject it was necessary for a deputy to use force. The public defender makes allegations about the use of force and how it was documented. Video of the incident was also released to the media. Please watch Sheriff Sandra Hutchens message to the community providing the facts about the incident.

After a decade of sending the County's newest law enforcement officers off into the community, Sheriff Hutchens lead the swearing in for the final time last night at her last #OCSD Academy graduation before retirement. Congrats to class #232! ๐ŸŽ‰
