In case you are starting your #Halloween celebration early, here is an oldie but goodie with some safety tips for kids! #Celebrate safely Carlsbad. #flashbackfriday Halloween preparation • Choose safe, comfortable costumes and shoes that do not restrict movement. • Avoid dark-colored costumes. • Wear make-up rather than a mask. • Use reflective fabric or tape to improve visibility. • Plan a Halloween party instead of trick-or-treating. • Turn on exterior lights and remove hazardous objects from entry for trick-or-treaters. • Plan a trick-or-treat route in advance. Choose houses where you know the occupant. Halloween day • Avoid trick-or-treating alone – stay with an adult or in groups. • Stay in your own neighborhood. • Stick to the preplanned route. • Start early in the evening before it is completely dark. • Carry a flashlight or a light stick. • Carry a cellular phone. • Stay in well-lighted areas. • Walk on sidewalks and cross at corners or lights; do not cross mid-block. • Avoid dark areas and houses. Don’t go to houses with the lights off. • Never enter a home without parental permission, even if in a group. • Avoid candles and open flames. • Have parents inspect treats before eating. • Do not eat anything that is not sealed or in its original package. • Use extra caution while driving all evening. • Tricks – property damage or vandalism – are not acceptable. • Report suspicious activity or crime by calling 760-931-2197 when it is taking place.

Join us and the California Office of Traffic Safety and support the #PedestriansDontHaveArmor Campaign. You might see us out-and-about at intersections sharing pedestrian safety information. Here is a little more from OTS: It’s a two-way street. Drivers and pedestrians must work together to demonstrate safe behaviors on the road, helping to protect themselves and those around them - • Make yourself visible: wear bright colored clothes and carry a flashlight if you are walking at night. • Avoid dangerous behaviors: always walk on the sidewalk (no jaywalking), stay sober and make eye contact with drivers – don’t assume the driver can see you. • Stay off your phones, talking and especially texting distracts you from paying attention to your surroundings. • Look before you step: cross streets at marked crosswalks/intersections, obey traffic signals and watch for turning vehicles. • Look left-right-left before crossing a street. • Don’t speed, follow the speed limit and never use your phone; always be cautious of your surroundings. • Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. • Look out for pedestrians, especially in hard-to-see conditions such as at night or in bad weather. • Pedestrians have the right of way at any crosswalk or intersection, so yield and be prepared to stop. • Stop at the crosswalk stop line to give drivers in other lanes an opportunity to see and yield to pedestrians too. • Be cautious when backing up – pedestrians, especially young children, can move across your path.
