On Wednesday, May 2, 2018, the South Central Regional SWAT Team (SCR-SWAT) comprised of officers from the towns of North Haven, East Haven, Branford, North Branford, Madison and Guilford were conducting an operation in the Town of North Haven on Quinnipiac Avenue. Officers were deployed to a residence in an attempt to effect an arrest following an investigation of a domestic violence incident reported earlier. Officers attempted to draw out the suspect peacefully for several hours. Officers began securing the various buildings on the property when suddenly a massive explosion occurred in the barn. Numerous SWAT officers were in the immediate vicinity of the building when the building exploded, causing a massive fire which spread to several buildings on the property. The force of the explosion was so violent, the officers were blown off their feet, away from the structure. Amidst the chaos, officers on scene, including injured officers acted heroically, rushing towards the danger to rescue their injured comrades. These officers are the bravest of the brave, working dangerous conditions to keep our communities safe. Nine officers sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized following the blast. Five officers from East Haven, three from North Haven, and one from Branford were sent to the hospital with injuries including concussions, broken bones, burns, and leg and knee injuries. While all of the officers have finally been released from the hospital, several have very long roads to recovery for their physical and psychological injuries. Some have had, and others will require surgeries. All of them need our help. Our brother officers need our emotional support, but also need financial support as some are single income families and rely on overtime to survive. Money raised on this page will help the officers support their families. Any additional funds not used to support the officers will be donated to charitable organizations that support law enforcement.

East Haven High School Mock D.U.I. Crash Earlier today in conjunction with the East Haven Fire Department and the East Haven chapter of S.A.D.D. (Students Against Destructive Decisions) we took part in a Mock D.U.I. crash. The mock crash depicted a fatal motor vehicle accident scene involving students that appear to have just left their school’s prom and drove drunk causing the accident. Students from S.A.D.D. were used as actors and played the accident victims, drunk driver (who was arrested), and Grim reaper. The rest of the S.A.D.D. student actors were dressed in all black with painted faces and walked stoically behind a hearse as it drove away with the victims inside of it. As this was taking place, a student read the poem “I Went to a Party Mom”. The message was powerful for all involved, including the first responders who were a part of the scenario. The video was streamed live on the East Haven Police Department Facebook page and has been posted to the page. The message here serves as a visual of how final certain decisions can be. Students need to see the reality of what getting behind the wheel drunk looks like and how it can change your life in an instant if the wrong decision is made. With services like Uber, Lyft, and taxi services, there is no reason why anyone needs to get behind the wheel of a car impaired. We all need to come together as a community and see to it that a tragedy like the one depicted today at the high school never actually happens in East Haven. Anthony Vaspasiano, S.A.D.D. advisor for the EHHS told me his students began preparing for this event over two months ago. He stated that he was extremely proud of the students who took the assignment very seriously and that he hopes it really hits home for the students in attendance. East Haven’s prom is this Saturday night, May 12, 2018.

Congratulations to Sergeant Kevin Klarman who was honored at the Exchange Club of Branford’s “Honor Our Shoreline Heroes” dinner on May 1. Sergeant Klarman has received the Medal of Merit on three separate occasions and has been acknowledged several times for exemplary performance for incidents involving armed subjects and the apprehension of a kidnapping suspect who had abducted a toddler. Congratulations Sergeant Klarman for a job well done!

We want to thank everyone for reaching out to us during this extremely emotional time. Three officers have since been released with two remaining in the hospital. Let’s all say a prayer tonight for a speedy recovery for all involved. Thanks again for all your support.

We have just released DASH CAM footage of Officer Donato Palma's stolen vehicle pursuit. Two apprehensions were made as a result of this pursuit. No injuries were sustained during this incident. On 04/19/2018 at approximately 11:45pm, East Haven Dispatch advised patrolling officers that the New Haven Police Department was on Interstate 91 north near Exit 8 in pursuit of a stolen Gold GMC Yukon with New York plates. It was determined that the New Haven Police Department terminated the pursuit somewhere near the East Haven town line, but a description and last known location was provided to all responding officers. Officer Donato Palma located the vehicle in question as he turned on to Charnes Drive and attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop in the area of Foxon Hill Road after he observed the vehicle disregard a stop sign and pass cars in a no passing zone at a high rate of speed. The vehicle continued westbound on Foxon Hill Road, driving recklessly, crossing over Quinnipiac Avenue and on to Smith Street in New Haven. In an attempt to elude police, the vehicle entered the Sunset Ridge Apartments, 341 Smith Avenue and proceeded to drive recklessly through the parking lot, eventually encountering a narrow portion of parking lot with no possible outlet. The vehicle continued straight, entering a wooded area and traveled down an embankment and struck a tree. With the assistance of the New Haven Police Department, two apprehensions were made without further incident. Taken into custody was the driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as Noel Adon (01/14/2000) of 2 Bouchet Lane, New Haven, CT and a 17 year old unidentified juvenile. Both individuals were transported to the hospital for evaluation. Once they were released, they were transported to the East Haven Police Department where they were processed. Adon was charged with Larceny in the Second Degree, Engaging Police in Pursuit, Reckless Driving, Interfering with a Police Investigation, and Operating w/o a License. Adon was held on a $10,000.00 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 2, 2018 at G.A. 23, 121 Elm Street New Haven, CT The juvenile was issued a juvenile summons charging him with Conspiracy to Commit Larceny in the Second Degree, and Interfering with a Police Investigation. He was given a juvenile court date of May 2, 2018.
