Press Release 10/29/18: On 10/26/18 James Cunnington, age 33, of East Haven was arrested by the Guilford Police Department on a warrant issued by New Haven Superior Court for Cruelty to Animals (4 counts) Illegally Obtaining Drugs (6 counts), and Doctor Shopping (4 counts). He was held on a $25,000 court set bond and arraigned 10/26/18. The investigation determined that Cunnigton had been obtaining prescription pain drugs from a number of veterinary offices in Guilford and the shoreline area to treat suspicious reoccurring injuries to his two dogs and was in fact using the drugs himself. Guilford Police Department was assisted in the investigation by both the Guilford and East Haven Animal Control Offices and the East Haven Haven Police Department. Guilford Animal Control took custody of the two dogs belonging to Cunnington and had them examined and treated for their injuries. Both dogs remain in the care of the Guilford Animal Control.

When the Guilford Police Department gets scam calls from the fake AT&T scammers using a spoofed number.... you just have to laugh... and spread the word ๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ”Š You just canโ€™t make up how low these scammers are willing to go. โฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธ Picture this... ๐Ÿ“ž you receive a call from yourself, caller ID will say your own name, and the recording on the other line says, โ€œHello, this is AT&T. There has been fraudulent activity with your phone account and we will be shutting off your service unless you confirm the activity is you. Please press 1 to speak with a representative.โ€ Well... they called us.... the Guilford Police Department.... with our number... ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Sometimes you just canโ€™t make it up.... ๐Ÿคฃ Needless to say... We did not give them our social security numbers.... We did not verify our credit cards on file... We did not give them our address or motherโ€™s maiden name... AND, much to their disappointment, we did not give them our PIN number for our account. Phew... dodged that scam. Hope you have a great day and please share this so others donโ€™t fall for it ๐Ÿš”

It's that time of year again. Romance is alive in the deer world and it is wreaking havoc on the morning and evening commutes. Typically November is the start of the Deer Rut (mating season) and it sends the deer into a frenzy; leaping across the street to chase a doe or fleeing a large buck. With the crazy weather this Fall, the deer have chosen to court their mates a little sooner. Inevitably, over 1 million drivers this year will have some type of collision with a deer which can cause not only damage to your vehicle, but injury or death to the vehicle occupants. There are a few tips below that can help you avoid this type of collision. 1. The Golden Rule: Where there is ONE, there are MORE. Deer travel in groups so it is important to remember that if you see one cross the street or on the side of the road, you can be sure there are more. Slow down, put your hazards on to alert the traffic around you and continue with caution. Feel free to honk and scare the deer if needed. ๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ”Š๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸฆŒ๐ŸฆŒ๐ŸฆŒ 2. The majority of deer collisions occur at dusk and dawn. Make sure you have your headlights on as deer eyes are extremely reflective. They are visible from several hundred feet away so be sure to constantly scan the edges of the roadways. Give yourself extra time if you have to travel during dawn and dusk and reduce speed near wooded areas and where deer crossing signs are posted. Deer crossing signs are in places where deer traffic is extremely high and where there have been a large number of reported deer collisions. โš ๏ธโš ๏ธโš ๏ธ 3. Deer whistles work. The small plastic whistles that stick onto the front of your car are effective. The whistles make a noise that alert the deer when traveling 25 mph or over. The unpleasant noise the whistles produce cause the deer to run away from the source of the sound. They can be purchased at most hardware stores and auto stores and are fairly inexpensive. ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ 4. It should go without saying, but wear your seatbelt. Often times drivers will try to avoid the deer in the roadway and veer off the street into a fixed object like a tree, or worse, into oncoming traffic. Many fatalities that do occur with deer collisions are because the occupants or drivers were not wearing their seatbelt. โค๏ธ Keep in mind that you can do everything right and still be involved in a collision with a deer. If that happens, follow these steps: 1. Don't panic. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ 2. Pull to the side of the road where it is safe to do so. ๐Ÿš˜ 3. Put your hazards on. ๐Ÿšง 4. Call the police and provide them with your location and advise if the deer is in the road or still alive. ๐Ÿš” 5. Unfortunately the deer is not always killed by the collision and officers have to respond to dispatch the deer. It is not a part of the job that anyone likes, but if the animal is suffering, it is the humane thing to do. In most cases, the deer carcass is removed by residents in town who have registered with the Guilford Police Department on the deer list. Those residents will take the deer and feed their families. On occasion, the deer is tagged and removed by DOT or DPW on the next working day. ๐ŸฆŒ Thank you for sharing and drive carefully! ๐Ÿš”

Phone rings: โ˜Ž๏ธ You: "Hello?" Scammer: (scratchy phone connection) "Grandma?" You: "Billy, is that you? How are you." Scammer: "I'm not so good. Can you help me? I got into some trouble." You: "What kind of trouble?" Scammer: "I need bond money and I can't tell mom or dad. I need your help. Can you help me?" You: "How can I help?" Scammer: "Go to Wal-Mart and send a Money Gram or go to the store and get a Green Dot card? Can you do that for me Gram? Please? I really need your help. Mom and Dad will kill me if they find out. Please don't tell them. I will make it up to you." You: "Of course I will help you. I love you Billy. I won't call your mom or dad." This is just one example of the "Grandparent Scam" going around Guilford recently. Scammers are using the love of a grandparent to manipulate them into sending money. There are people who fall victim to this scam daily because they love their grandchildren very much and are not aware of the criminal elements that readily exploit that love. Please talk to your parents and grandparents about this type of scam and encourage them to never answer an unknown number and or give personal information over the phone.
