Well, friends - the Gainesville Police Department Facebook is undergoing a bit of a change, and I’m going to break the first person wall again. My name is Officer Ben Tobias and for the past six years, I’ve been the agency's spokesperson and behind the scenes as the social media manager for GPD on Facebook and Twitter. I’ve done a majority of the work myself, but have had help from amazing colleagues such as Detective Matt Goeckel, and Acting Chief Inspector Jorge Campos while I was away or during emergency operations. My last day on the payroll of the Gainesville Police Department is today. I have accepted a job in the private sector - something I wasn’t actively looking for, but the new opportunity is just too good to pass up. For the past six years, you have allowed me into your lives to provide information from a police department with my humorous spin. We have enjoyed some great times with the Twitter battle with the Oxford MS Police Department; the story of Officer Bobby White where even Shaquille O' Neal got involved, and the creation of the Basketball Cop Foundation; and of course the Hurricane Irma #HotCop phenomenon that launched the celebrity career of Officer Daniel Rengering. We’ve also had some tough times together - but in the end we were able to learn how to interact with one another so much more effectively using the wonderful technology of social media. Leaving the agency is certainly bittersweet. I’m going to miss the ability to talk directly with the public and share the stories of the brave men and women that serve this community with integrity. As I leave you - please remember that the Gainesville Police Department is always here for you. You are never bothering the police by contacting us to report suspicious activity. And also - PLEASE lock your cars!! This has been fun folks - I’m honored to have served you in this capacity. Until next time, Officer Ben Tobias (BT) Badge #719

Don't miss GPD's very own Daniel Rengering on #Survivor, TONIGHT at 8pm, on CBS! Good luck on your journey to ONE-MILLION DOLLARS!
