We received a report this morning about a Social Security number scam that may be going around where the scammers are trying to convince people that their social security number has been changed. Please know that the Social Security Administration will not arbitrarily change your Social Security number! If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond to it! It is most likely a scam. Here are some tips to deal with these government imposters: • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are. • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world. • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller. If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY).

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility enforcement campaign runs from August 17 through September 3, 2018. During this time, law enforcement will be on high alert, pulling over and arresting anyone caught drinking and driving. Make sure your Labor Day weekend is only full of happy memories, not a lifetime of regrets. This holiday, remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

Stop Signs are being installed on Orange Blossom Avenue in Sebring! On Monday, August 13th 2018, the City of Sebring will be installing two new stop signs on Orange Blossom Avenue at the intersection of Sixth Street in the Highlands Homes Subdivision in Sebring. As there have never been stop signs at this location, advance warning (Stop Ahead) signs will also be installed to warn motorists of the newly installed stop signs. Please help spread the word of this traffic change! Please drive safely!

The men and women of the Sebring Police Department wish to honor all those who have served in the United States Military on this Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of May. The effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service was led by President Harry S. Truman. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day, which was first celebrated on May 20, 1950. Thank you all for your service!

Team Sebring had a great morning at the 2018 United Way Day of Caring. We accomplished a lot out at the Highlands County Humane Society helping clean up and prepare the Terror Trail for this year's fundraiser. Thanks to all who helped!
