Sarasota County Sheriff's Office News

Traffic Deputies Matt Binkley and Luke Heyman visited the Sunshine Academy (SKY Academy) to meet little ones and show them what it takes to become a deputy sheriff. Just as deputies were about to leave, students gave them a stack of drawings with perhaps our favorite on top, that reads, “The police are on a fire truck helping put out fires.” 😎 #KidsSayTheDarndestThings #CopHumor #CopsOneFirefightersZero

Today first responders and veterans gathered at McIntosh Middle School where students honored those sworn to protect both their communities and nation. We are always so impressed by the enthusiasm and support we receive from these incredible young people. THANK YOU McINTOSH MIDDLE!

Today we presented a check to Sarasota K9 Search & Rescue, Inc. to support the phenomenal work they do in Sarasota County. Special Operations Lieutenant Jon Varley presented the funds to Sheila Sullivan, Division Supervisor over Human Remains Detection (and retired sheriff's office detective). Also on hand to celebrate was K-9 Kismet who has played a major role in several important investigations over the years. We are happy to support this great organization using seized/recovered cash that went unclaimed. Thanks for all you do, SSAR!

We are pleased to announce we will be hosting our second annual #SCSOHolidayToyDrive benefiting the 12th Judicial Circuit of Florida’s Guardian ad Litem program this year! The initiative launched in 2017 when we moved into our new headquarters on Cattleridge Blvd. in Sarasota. With help from agency members, residents, local businesses and organizations, we collected more than 750 donations including more than $1,000 in gift cards last year! With your help, we are hoping to set a new record in 2018! Donations will be accepted beginning Saturday, December 1 through Saturday, December 15. Citizens can drop off new and unwrapped gifts every day between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Our toy drive will take place during our open house on Saturday, December 8. The first 300 attendees who deliver a new and unwrapped toy or gift card will receive a free sheriff’s office t-shirt. Read all the details here: https://bit.ly/2RJhjVt

Mounted Patrol Deputies Stephen Brown and Ben Kern along with Siesta Key Deputies Mike Schermock and Jason Strom stopped by SCFD Station #13 to visit kids from the Out-Of-Door Academy on Siesta Key. Parents - do us a favor and continue telling your children they should run TOWARDS us if they are ever in trouble; never to be afraid of us or that we will “take them away.” We love our community and relish the opportunity to influence young people’s lives. #Community #Service #Partnership

Domestic violence is a non-negotiable. It's not up for discussion, nor is it "OK" under any circumstance. On Sunday, we responded to the Publix on Fruitville Road for reports of a possible abduction. As it turns out, 22-year-old Eduar Moreno got into an altercation with a female while inside the grocery store and used physical force to remove her and drive her away. The woman tried to escape and plead for help from shoppers. Luckily, Good Samaritans watched the incident unfold, provided deputies with Moreno's vehicle tag, and today he is behind bars. If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, please call us or contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1.800.799.7233. More details of Moreno's arrest can be read here: https://bit.ly/2zwmVuA

Detectives charged a Sarasota woman with Manslaughter after investigation revealed she provided fentanyl to a woman who suffered a fatal overdose. The investigation launched September 4 when we received a 911 call for an overdose in which the victim, 42-year-old Kacie Tipp, later died. Through investigation, detectives learned Tipp contacted 41-year-old Tiffany Johnson earlier in the day to purchase cocaine. Unfortunately what Johnson provided was a mix of fentanyl and heroin. On Wednesday, detectives charged Johnson with Sale of Fentanyl as well as a single count of Manslaughter. She remains in custody today on $100,000 bond.
