Update #2 11-05-18 On October 29, 2018, at approximately 12:19 a.m., Shoshone County Deputies John Richter and Jake Delaney responded to a report of suspicious activity in the area of F St. and Washington St. in the City Smelterville, Idaho. Upon arrival, deputies located a 38 year old male inside a motorhome, which did not belong to him, parked on the property of Nickerson’s Towing. While the deputies detained the male, another man exited a van parked nearby and began firing in the direction of the deputies. Deputies returned fire, taking action to safely keep the detainee out of the line of fire. The shooter, later identified as 80 year old Richard B. Willoughby Jr., was wounded three times in the exchange of gun fire. Deputies rendered first aid to Willoughby who was subsequently transported for further medical treatment. He was later declared to be in stable condition the morning of the incident. The detained male was unharmed, and was cited and released on scene for unlawful entry. Neither deputy was injured in the shooting and are currently on administrative leave per department protocol pending investigation.

A message from the Idaho Transportation Department.

On October 29th at 12:19 am, the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office responded to a suspicious person(s) call in Smelterville, Idaho. During the initial investigation, an officer involved shooting occurred sending one man to Shoshone Medical Center for treatment. No law enforcement personnel were injured during this critical incident. Currently, there is heavy police activity in the City of Smelterville while this incident is investigated by an outside agency. More information will be released as it becomes available.

10-27-2018 On 10-26-2018 around 9:00 p.m. the Osburn police department responded to a call for service at the Osburn gas mart. Upon arrival the suspect vehicle left at a high rate of speed. An officer attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver failed to yield and entered I-90 eastbound at m.p. #60. A deputy was able set up spike strips at milepost #62 that were successfully deployed and the vehicle came to a stop around milepost #65. Wilbur Presley Allen was taking into custody for local charges and an escape warrant out of Washington.

10-15-2018 Deputies responded to a residence in Smelterville for a possible explosive device. Upon arrival and after conducting some interviews it was determined the spokane bomb squad would be called to assist in the removal of the device. The device was removed from the residence and transported up government gulch for destruction. The Sheriffs Office would like to thank the citizens who were evacuated for there cooperation along with Shoshone County District #2 fire department and the Spokane Bomb Squad.

Hardline phones are down in the Cataldo to Big Creek area at this time. 911 capabilities appear to be available through to the Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office will have all our hardline numbers diverted to a non emergency number direct to dispatch. That number is 1-208-582-0829. Good morning everyone. Great news! Tuesday (9/18/18) crews will be blackening out the existing wayward pavement striping between the Snakepit and MM16 on the CDA River Road. Weather permitting, Wednesday and Thursday crews will be painting new lines. Please slow down and be aware around the workers. Thank you!

September 10th 2018: At approximately 10:35 hours, the Shoshone County Sheriff"s Office responded to the City of Osburn to assist the Osburn Police Department (OPD) regarding a threat made to law enforcement. As a precautionary measure, Silver Hills Elementary and the Wallace Jr/Sr High school were placed on lock-down but have since been advised that lock-down is no longer needed. OPD is the primary investigating agency for this matter and may release more information at a later date.

08-30-2018 Drivers License division will attempt to be open starting at 0900 hours in the morning 08-31-18. Please be patient as the system is still running slow. If the problem persists we will shut down drivers license until Tuesday Sept. 4th due to the holiday. Thank you for all your patience as we share in your frustration.

The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office would like to congratulate Deputy Joseph Johnston and Deputy Matthew Corey on earning their Basic Detention Certification from the Idaho POST Academy. Both Joey and Matthew demonstrated outstanding leadership as well as academic success while at the academy and we couldn’t be prouder. Welcome back gentlemen. Press Release: 8/21/2018 1700 Fire investigators from the Idaho Department of Lands and Shoshone County Fire District #2- along with Law Enforcement from Kellogg Police Department and the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office have spent numerous hours today following up on each fire started East of Kellogg, ID Monday evening. The agencies are seeing many similarities in each start and have collected evidence from the locations. Many interviews with witnesses have also taken place throughout the day. The final number of ignitions is 17 and the total area burned was contained to less than 1 acre in size, over a 1 mile walking distance. The Shoshone County Fire Chiefs Association wanted to thank all parties involved for your quick phone calls that assisted the first responders to locate and suppress the starts. The residents continued support is valued throughout this process. All of the agencies are continuing to ask the public for any information, to assist with the investigation, please call the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office at 556-1114. On August 20th 2018 at 7:33 pm, first responders were dispatched to 13 fire starts on the East end of Kellogg, ID. Firefighters worked until midnight to contain the fires. The fires are determined to be human caused and are currently under investigation. The investigation and response is a coordinated effort between the Kellogg Police Department, Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office, Shoshone County Fire District #2 and the Idaho Department of Lands. All of the agencies are asking the public for any information, to assist with the investigation, please call the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office at 556-1114. Undersheriff Lindsey here. I was hoping the SCSO could get some help from the citizens with a recent theft. The IDL (Idaho Department of Lands) fire crews had a 10'x10' expandable/collapsible holding tank stolen from their work site in Kingston. Attached is a photo of what the holding tank looks like; however, the tank that was stolen was actually red in color. If you have any information about this missing tank, please contact Dep. 08-09-18 The trail between Heyburn State Park and Plummer is currently closed do to an ongoing fire. Please see the information below for further information. We currently have (1) active fire within our district. The “Boundary” was reported just after midnight this morning. The fire currently 2 acres in size, it is located in Heyburn State park and is burning next to the trail of the CDA’s bike path, about a mile West of the Heyburn Park trailhead. We currently have several engines and personnel on scene, as well as a helicopter and fixed wing water scooping aircraft working on the fire. Containment is currently estimated at 40%. The trail of the CDA’s bike path is currently closed from the Plummer trailhead, East to the Heyburn Park Trailhead. No structures are currently threatened at this time. 07-31-18 With the brief storm that came through the Silver Valley a couple of days ago we had several start up fires in the St. Joe area. You will see helicopters flying into the smelterville airport for maintenance and fuel. We will keep you updated as we get more information. Please be mindful as the fire danger is posted Very High.
