Wheaton Police Department News

---------------SCAM ALERT--------------SCAM ALERT--------------- There is a SCAM going on aroud the area currently that has been tricking a few people. The SCAM starts out by getting contacted over Facebook messanger or some other form of messanger/text. The person will usually be posing as a friend or realtive, becasue that person's account got hacked it will be under their name or profile, and will tell you they won this money and invested it in land etc etc., $500,000 is usually the amoun. They will then tell you your name is also on the same list to receive this large sum of cash. You will then be instructed to send a certain amount of money through a Western Union or other wire service and/or they will tell you to go buy $1000+ in I-tunes gift cards in increments of $100. Then they will tell you to scratch off the card's security code on the back and instruct you to take a picture of the number and the amount of the card and send it to them over the texts or messanger service. This may happen a number of times and then they will tell you someone will bring your money to your residence, which will never show up. Remember if it sounds fishy or to good to be true it probably is.

Merry Christmas everyone! Have a safe and fun, holiday season!

Just a reminder to everyone please make sure you lock your vehicles that sit outside over night. We had a couple incidents this weekend involving unlocked vehicles. So please lock your vehicles overnight and do not leave the keys in them.

A ring was found in the beer garden, at the fair. If it's yours, you can pick it up at the law enforcement center.

Today was Bike Safety Day at Pearson Elementary. The kids got to navigate an obstacle course and go on a road ride with volunteer helpers, Tina Lundquist and Derrick Hanson. Thank you so much for the help you two! Officer Berning, along with, Trey Deal and Nancy Laines, ran the obstacle course and the kids had a great time. Something else that has been done over the last couple years is the name of each child, in each grade, is put in a hat and the name drawn gets a brand new bike!! There were 6 bikes total. 3 were generously donated by Sag's Hardware Hank and the other 3 were purchased and donated by the Wheaton PD. Thanks to everyone who helped out, especially the 4 I mentioned earlier and a special Thank You Sag's Hardware!!

Sometimes it only takes one wrong move for a crash to happen. If that crash is with a motorcycle, the rider is more likely to be seriously injured or killed. In motorcycle crashes where the driver of another vehicle is at fault, failure to yield the right of way is still the leading contributing factor. Motorists: · Start seeing motorcyclists! They’re smaller and their speed and distance are more difficult to judge. · Always look twice before entering a roadway or changing lanes. · Give riders room and check blind spots. Both riders and drivers need to work together to share the road. For motorcycle safety tips visit motorcyclesafety.org Start Seeing Motorcyclists: Look Twice. Save A Life.
