Syracuse, N.Y. -- The latest forecasts show the potential for damaging winds across Upstate New York on Wednesday afternoon. "Confidence has increased in the potential for an organized severe-weather threat to occur Wednesday afternoon," said the Storm Prediction Center, part of the National Weather Service. Most of Upstate New York has a 15 percent chance of severe storms Wednesday. The storm center said a cold front moving through a very warm atmosphere Wednesday "should support a corridor of strong/damaging wind gusts across parts of New York and northern Pennsylvania." Most of Upstate New York is the "slight" category, which means there's a 15 percent chance of severe storms. Those are defined as storms with 58 mph winds and/or 1-inch hail. "Strong wind gusts producing tree damage and downed power lines should be the primary severe risk, though a hail threat cannot be ruled out," the storm center said. Rain will likely be a half-inch or less.
