The Hugo Police Department recently received authorization from the Hugo City Council to apply for a USDA grant for the purchase of two new police units. After months of research, command staff concluded that the 4WD Dodge Ram Special Service Vehicles were better suited for the department's needs versus SSV sedans. Some of the determining factors included: Large cabs with taller seats reposition an officer's torso and legs allowing for increased comfort. This in turn decreases fatigue and back related issues due to the large amount of equipment officers carry on their belt, thus decreasing down time as well as overtime. Full frames instead of unibody, which decreases the frame and body flex that causes myriad body and suspension problems. Four-Wheel drive instead of two-wheel drive, which provides a beefier suspension with greater travel and ground clearance to better handle some of the rough roads we patrol, not to mention four-wheel drive will be extremely useful in inclement weather. The taller ride height also provides a better field of view for officers, thus decreasing the likelihood of collisions and the resulting liability issues. Four-Wheel drive vehicles also hold their value by more than 2/3rd versus sedans and small SUVs. This will lessen the overall purchase price when buying replacement units. Having a bed allows for the transport of larger stolen property as well as the transportation of critical supplies during times of disaster.
