It’s that time again! School Starts August 9, 2018 Students will be returning to school and the school buses will be running routes. We need to pay close attention in and around the schools for kids walking to school and school zone speed limits. The Sallisaw Police Department will be enforcing traffic around the schools and in the areas approaching the schools. Please drive with care and be cautious, children aren’t thinking about the traffic they have school and friends on their mind. If you’re driving behind a school bus, allow a greater following distance. It will give you more time to stop once the yellow lights start flashing. It is illegal to pass a School Bus that is stopped to load or unload children. Never pass a bus from behind or from either direction if you’re on an undivided road if it is stopped to load or unload children. If the yellow or red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended, traffic must stop. The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children; stop far enough back to allow them room to safety enter and exit the bus. Be alert; children often are unpredictable, and they tend to ignore hazards and take risks. Let’s have a safe and accident free school year!!
