James Wilcher - Officer of the Month
Throughout his employment, Officer James Wilcher has continuously demonstrated hard work and dedication toward making the city of Tampa a safer place for everyone. Below are just a few examples of why this recognition is well deserved.
On September 23, 2017, Officer Wilcher responded to N. Perry Avenue for the report of a man who was not breathing. Using his AED, he was able to revive the man – allowing him to survive his medical emergency.
The next day, Officer Wilcher responded to the Broadway Bar for a disturbance. When he arrived, he saw a male carrying a gun. It was later found out that the man was a convicted felon. Due to Officer Wilcher's diligence and documentation, this felon was charged federally and was recently sentenced to 19 years in prison.
On June 6, 2018, Officer Wilcher was dispatched to N. Ashley Drive for the report of an overdose. He removed a dose of Narcan from his belt and administered it to the unresponsive man. The male was revived and recovered at the hospital.
On August 22, 2018, Officer Wilcher was on his day off, enjoying some fishing near the Gandy Bridge. He witnessed a man purposefully jump off the bridge, in an attempt to end his life. Officer Wilcher grabbed the man from the water, holding his head above the water until on-duty Tampa Police Marine units could respond.
On September 30, 2018, Officer Wilcher conducted a traffic stop for an improper turn. When approaching the car, he could smell the odor of marijuana. Officer Wilcher located 563.7 grams of the narcotic inside the vehicle. The subject was already on probation for armed robbery, and now had violated his probation.
In recognition of his exemplary performance, not only for his life-saving measures, but also for arresting a vast number of prolific felons and making the city a safer place, Officer James Wilcher is the Tampa Police Department Officer of the Month.
