Press Release (up-Date) The suspect in the shooting has been identified as Datwan K. Lewis 41, of Palatka. Original Release: Palatka Fl., at approximately 0315 hours on September 27, 2018 the Palatka Police Department received a report of a domestic battery. The female victim in the incident who is not being identified at this time, requested to meet officers off scene at a local store. After the victim met with the officers, she went back to her apartment complex where she resides. At approximately 0340 hours the victim drove into the entryway of the apartment complex, and noticed the suspect was sitting inside of a white colored sport utility vehicle and appeared to be waiting on her. The victim immediately called the police department and officers responded. As officers arrived, they noticed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle traveling east on St. Johns Avenue. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle in the St. Johns River State College parking lot. Two officers approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver. As the officers talked to the driver, they noticed he was armed with a handgun. According to the officers, the man was advised to drop the gun several times. When the man did not comply with the orders, the officers were forced to discharge their firearms. After being wounded the man attempted to drive away but crashed the sport utility vehicle into some vehicles which were parked in the parking lot. The officers then approached the man who still had the firearm in his hand and took him into custody without having to use additional force. The firearm the man had in his hand is pictured below. Putnam County Rescue was called to the scene and transported the man to the Putnam Community Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased. The man’s identification will be released after next of kin notification is made. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been called and is currently on scene and investigating the shooting. Captain Matt Newcomb said the Police Department has a memorandum of understanding with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and they investigate all officer involved shootings for the agency.
