Subject: String of Moped Thefts on UH Manoa Campus UH Manoa has experienced a recent string of six moped thefts over the past 30 days. These thefts took place in multiple locations on campus, including lower campus and student housing moped parking areas. While it is still possible for a moped to be stolen while locked, some of these thefts involved mopeds that were unlocked or improperly locked. If you see suspicious activity, especially in parking areas, or if you have any information regarding any of our moped thefts, please call the UHM Department ofPublic Safety (DPS) at (808) 956-6911 or the Honolulu Police Department at 911. DPS would like to remind our students, faculty and staff of these important mopedsafety and security tips: - Park your vehicle, bike or moped in a secured, well-lit area. - Always lock your vehicle, bike or moped, even if leaving it unattended for just a few minutes. - Utilize the FREE UH Manoa Bike Cage. You can also use the Bike Cage to store your moped over the summer with a valid permit. For more information, visit this link: http://manoa.hawaii.edu/commuter/bike.html - If parking in a locked area is not an option, lock your property with at least two heavy locks that cannot be easily cut or removed, and secure them to an immovable object. For more information on how to properly lock your bike or moped, visit http://manoa.hawaii.edu/dps/biketheft.html. - Use a solid steel lock that cannot easily be cut or removed from your moped. Be sure that locks or chains cannot be lifted over the seat or handlebar area when locked. - Check with Cycle Manoa about renting space in their bike lockers (bikes only). You can request a bike locker by email: cyclemanoa@gmail.com. - Remove unsecured items or personal belongings from your bike or moped before leaving. - Don’t park your vehicle, bike or moped in the same location every time, or leave it unattended for days at a time – thieves notice patterns. - To avoid a citation or tow on campus, park in a designated parking area and ensure that you have a current parking permit. - Do not leave valuables inside a vehicle or unattended, especially if they are in open view. For more vehicle safety tips, visit http://manoa.hawaii.edu/dps/vehicletheft.html. - If you observe any suspicious activity or behavior such as an individual loitering around parking areas, tampering with vehicles, or wandering in an area without legitimate business, call DPS at (808) 956-6911 or HPD at 911.

Aloha campus community, We have received multiple calls regarding the man causing a disruption near student housing, and wanted to let you know that we are aware of the situation. DPS officers issued a trespass warning to the person several days ago. Since the bus stop on Dole St. is City & County property (and not UHM/state owned), this is an HPD matter. DPS is working to ensure that the man does not violate the trespass or harass our students by increasing patrols in the area. We have informed HPD of the situation. HPD has responded when requested, and assisted DPS as much as they could within the confines of state and federal law. Anyone who would like to escalate the situation with HPD can call police dispatch. If you see the man come back onto UHM property or student housing areas, call DPS at 956-6911.
