Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving Halloween is a night for friends and family to enjoy candy, costumes, and memory-making. Tragically, Halloween drunk-driving fatalities are on the rise. Over the last 5 years (2012-2016) there were 168 drunk driving fatalities on Halloween night. From 2012 to 2016, 44% of all people killed in motor vehicle crashes on Halloween night (6 p.m. October 31 – 5:59 a.m. November 1) were in crashes involving a drunk driver, according to NHTSA statistics. Children out trick-or-treating, and those accompanying them, are also at risk, as 14% of pedestrian fatalities on Halloween night (2012-2016) involved drunk drivers. Younger people are most at risk: The 21- to 34-year-old age group accounted for the most fatalities (46%) in drunk-driving crashes on Halloween night in 2016.

Arresting Hunger is a program originally started by the Iowa State Patrol to raise money to purchase Thanksgiving meal kits through Iowa food banks. This year, your Cerro Gordo County law enforcement agencies are helping the cause by having a friendly, local competition to support the fight against hunger. Anyone can donate by going to www.arrestinghunger.com and following the donation instructions there. After donating, print your receipt and take it to the law enforcement agency of your choice and turn it in at the front desk. The money will be counted toward the agency's total donation during the course of the program. Another way to support Arresting Hunger is to bring non-perishable food items to the agency of your choice. Money and food items will be "scored" to get a total for each agency. The winning agency takes home a traveling trophy and bragging rights! All donations will go to Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank in Mason City. Partner with us to help support those who are food insecure at Thanksgiving. Please drop off your receipt or non-perishable food items to Cerro Gordo County Sheriff Office now through November 16, 2018.
